How I Build up My Vocabulary

1690 views. 2010-5-15 16:07 |

Several friends were curious about my vocabulary, a matter which I have seldom gave serious consideration before.  When a good friend asked me whether I looked up the word in the dictionary during my writing, the question hit home. Each of us has a unique way in learning English, but I am a slow learner, so I can only study step by step in my own silly way. I seldom referred the unfamiliar words to the dictionary either during reading or writing, because it might distract me from my theme and  damp my ardor in the completion of my work.

Writing in English is new to me, and I have no teacher to consult, so I think the best way is to imitate the writings of my favorite authors.  There another question arises, as the works are so many and so daunting, how can I find the parts best suiting my purpose?   As my time and energy spent on English is limited, so I thought up a way of solving this problem.  After reading every book,  I always marked out  the good passages with a highlighter for later review. This method proved to be effective. During the past two years, I have built up my own reservoir  which consists of a variety of passages and sentences.  When I was not busy, I would  read them time and again with the intention that some of the expressions would become my own. I hoped to share some with my friends, who might be interested in them.  From today on, I shall page by page publish a small part of my reservoir on my blog .  I hope it might be helpful to my friends.

It surely will help. Thank you for sharing. But I have a question, what if you can not find the proper words to express yourself when read and write while not refer to the dictionary?

That is simple. I just expressed it in another way. I often experienced that before. Sometimes it took me a few days for me to come up with the right word. After all  it is not a homework having a deadline.

Neither of us has a teacher, but we both believe books are best teachers.
I've began reading original English masterpieces for only half a year. Our study methods are different a little. How can we read through a book full of comfusing vocabulary? Perhaps I rely on the dictionary so much that words slip from my head when I pick my pen. My learning way is slow and silly--memorizing and forgetting and reviewing and memorizing~

For me I prefer to refer to dictionaries only when it is necessary;this helps me better understand the main thoughts.

I've just finished reading your blogs above and also "vovabulary building part 1 & 2", and that's what amazed me a lot! It really shames me since I am an English major yet I didn't do so well and hard as you do! I agree with you that reading is the best way to level up our English and enlarge our vocabulary. I like reading, however, my speed of reading is really slow although I master the methods of fast reading like skimming and scanning. I cannot do fast reading. Everytime I read an article or a book, I read it sentence by sentence and try to analyse every single one. I also take notes during reading, and all these things together take me lots of time to read....
