A few days ago, my parents went out alone for their anniversary celebration, and my sister and I were left home alone with our grandparents. After dinner, I suggested to my grandmother to take a walk outside the building. My grandmother's leg was injured almost 12 years ago, and she has had trouble walking every since. She can only edge step by step ahead to walk on her own.
When I say a walk, it is really taking my grandmother out on her wheelchair, while my sister, my grandfather and I walked. I could tell that my grandmother was very happy and excited. After a while, she even offered to push my sister and I on the wheelchair. When we heard this suggestion at first, we rejected immediately. Then she told us that she often pushed my grandfather while he sat on the wheelchair, and I thought it will be good walking practice for her.
My sister and I took turns sitting on the wheelchair while my grandmother pushed us. To my surprise, she walked faster while pushing the wheelchair than when she normally walked. When I stood up again, I saw a smile on her face that was the brightest I had seen in years. I am so glad we went out that dusk, even if it was for barely 30 minutes.
I was touched by my grandmother's simpleness and happiness, and also by the relationship between my grandparents. When we are not in Beijing, all they really have is each other, and it is so touching for the two of them to live like they do.
I only have a few days left in Beijing, and I plan on spending as much time as possible with my grandparents.
