About my oral English teacher

766 views. 2010-5-16 20:34 |Individual Classification:Learning English|

OMGIF, that’s Phil said the day before yesterday, at the Oral English class. It’s short for: Oh my God, It’s Friday. In America, the students don’t have classes on Friday afternoon, it’s boring. But I appreciate that I can have these amazing English classes, all of them. They give me life-urge and hope which I cannot gain from my major. I really appreciate it. The two days is my happiest time in a week. I feel something happen to me inside and the enthusiasm to learn, to improve myself, to the next upper stage. This time Phil shows us some western table manners and etiquette. It’s interesting. I realize a lot which I never paid attention to before. The western etiquette is very different from that in China. It’s much more complicated, which demands much cautiousness and carefulness. Phil hands off each of us three plates, a bowl, a cup, one spoon, one knife, one fork and of course, a napkin. I even have thought he must bring us a delicious cake. All of the things are made up of paper. But that’s enough to us to learn the manners in the formal situation. Phil said his family is very formal and he must be very polite with his family. However, he needn’t do that with his friends. In China, he deals with the meals as the Chinese. He shows us many pictures of food in American. While we Chinese have rice as our main food, they have bread instead. When he told us he may eat rice once a month, we are surprised. But that’s one of the differences. Seeing the pictures, we are so starved. Phil said he was always hungry, all of us laughed. America is a country of diversity. So there are so many different kinds of food, so does China. The Mexican food is alike that in Sichuan and Chongqing, very spicy, which most of the American cannot be accustomed to. On the contrary, they like sweet food, just like the Indian food. Indian food is mainly sweet and sour. We saw some pictures of Italian seafood and noodles, too. I thought of the BBC’s trick on an April fool’s day. BBC said the spaghetti grows on the tree. It’s ridiculous so many people believed it and send so many letters to provide help. It is us Chinese invented noodles, but frankly speaking, Italians have improved and developed, even changed it. Noodles and spaghetti have had much difference with each other. Many foreigners believe Italy invented the noodles. As Phil said, the tradition is disappearing and we all should keep moving forward. It’s real funny to have him as our oral English teacher.

Language always comes with the culture, so I think it is really necessary to have a native speaker as your language teacher, then you can learn more about the culture.
