Condom Dispensers on Campus

We’ve heard about free condoms offered to college students in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Then how about condom dispensers? (a vending machine u can obtain drinks, paper towels, cigars, etc. by pressing buttons 自动售卖机)

Well, 7 universities in Fujian province installed free dispensers of this type on their campuses on May 1st. No wonder it has stirred up controversy and discussions about a sensitive topic: college students’ sex lives. Supporters say that it is a commonplace for young couples in universities to live together in rented rooms off campus. Opponents, however, argue that these free condoms may encourage irresponsible sexual behaviors among college students.

At first, I have to admit that, this move is conducted for good, to offer more protection to those young lovebirds. All different levels of school authority actually are trying all means to help with the protection, such as selective courses or lectures about sexual health care. One cannot blame the relevant authority for its positive initiative.

From the standpoint of the students, most of them are now adults and they are supposed to shoulder the responsibilities for their own decisions. Since college students have been entitled to walk down the aisle, there is nothing wrong about their having sex life. They gonna do it if they want with or without free condoms. Except showing the awareness of responsibility, the authority also helps students cut their expenditure to some extent.

It is also true, however, that the students may get hurt or distracted from their studies by the hanky-panky. Therefore, it is necessary for the authority to promote a safer and more responsible sexual behavior among students.
