What Makes America Different

What Makes America Different?

As we all know, the United States has ranked No.1 power across the world. Then why it is America, rather than other countries on earth? And what factors contribute to its prosperity and power?

First, the scarce population as well as its vast territory has provided the early settlers a chance to explore this savage land. Abundant natural resources, such as mineral deposits, mild climate, etc. , have always cultivated Americans and enabled them to be ambitious about their future.

Secondly, most of the early settlers came to the New Continent due to the repression targeted on their religious belief. They came here for freedom from the religious persecution in Europe. Things did change after they settled in the new world. To restrict the new world from developing its own economy, the British government, however, levied a heavy tax on the settlers. No wonder that people out there longed to get rid of all such grasp. This strong desire for freedom was being echoed in every settler’s mind. And then there occurred Boston Tea Party, followed by the Declaration of Independence, and even a civil war. From this, one can see what Americans have done and would do for liberty and democracy. This incomparable persistence and courage, doubtlessly, is one of the contributing factors.

Speaking of its political system, it involves the federal system, and the Check and Balance structure. Both of the two can be counted as a giant leap in political field. The American political system has not only promoted the democracy to the maximal limit but also set a good example for other countries.

There are also many other factors contributing to the current American society. But the three above, in my opinion, have occupied the leading position.

As a historian i have studied many theories about why big empires raise and why they decline. Through history, some scientists recognize a pattern.

What you described is interesting. You wrote a long part about freedom. Maybe that was one of the push factors which contributed to the migration of European people to the Americas. Nevertheless, i believe the pull factor; "the American dream" (the idea that if you go to america, you can become rich and succesful if you work hard for it) is much stronger than what you described. The people looking for freedom only lived in the small colonies on the east cost. The mass migration occured much later than all events you described. Unfortunately, most of them found out that the American dream is nothing more than an idea on itself. But you could argue, it's one of the best products this country created. Most people on this planet believe in the American dream

The American dream of making something from nothing surely encouraged a lot. Truly they tend to fight much more fiercely than us Chinese, yet as far as I know as a history fan, their desire are more than for liberty.

Based on what you said, I think American chief character can come down to one word "venture". The early settlers ventured to American west, America promises worldwide imigrants they can make a successful venture there, and sofar Americans like to seek their fortune in alien fields as well as alien countries. Venture is dangerous, but also opens the window of vast opportunity.

Ofcourse there are many factors which contribute to the existance of this hyper power. The American dream is, i believe, a very unique point, because most other factors can also apply to other states.
