Red Hair

3632 views. 2010-12-12 23:00 |Individual Classification:Thoughts|

"Red Haired Barbarians", that's how the Chinese described my ancestors when they dealt with the first Dutch mercenaries who sailed to China about 500 years ago. According to the Chinese stories around that time. The Dutch are into piracy. They live on their ships, along with their children and wives and they have no land.

Most of those prejudices have been disproved  since my ancestors visited China for the first time. Nowadays, on Chinese schools, every Chinese student is learned that the Dutch come from a Country called The Netherlands or Holland and that they are not really into piracy but that they are true mercenaries. As most of you all know, most Dutch do not have red hair, but have blond or dark hair.

From the ones who do have red hair, an official scientific research have proved they are also common people. Every year, the famous British Medical Journal publishes a funny research in their Christmas edition. This year, a research on red haired people was published. The article proved that the prejudices about red people are based on rumors, not on truth. They do not lose more blood than others when they are wounded, they do not have a bigger chance to get a Hernia and they can resist pain as good as others. The research proved, however, that red haired people cannot stand extreme heat or cold as others. This is a remarkable conclusion if you take in account that those Red Haired Barbarians tried every way, in despite of the cold or the Barentsz sea or the Indian and Chinese sea to find their way to China.

What ever history tells us, due to technological advances, we know much more about each other now. What that is exactly I hope to learn from you: What is your view on the Dutch?

I believe you do not have a clear view on Chinese Foreign Policy. I do not know everything about China, but I'm learning and understanding more and more every day, due to my stay in China and the open discussions we have in class.

You have to keep in mind that China will always be different for me, because i'm not a Chinese. Common Chinese 'spoil' and treat outsiders well, sometimes better than insiders.

I watched the video. It's standard procedure. IR is my major...

Not all the outsiders, If you are from a poor country, you will have a different opinion.

I strongly disagree with you. In class we can learn a lot in open discussions (really open, not what you are used to in school) about all topics related to China because my classmates are both Chinese and non-chinese, they have different backgrounds, different perspectives and they are living in China between several months up to their whole lives. I believe with that, we have cover a lot.

International Relations is my major. My professors, both Chinese and Foreign, are to some extent involved in foreign policy making that is related to China. Having both Chinese and foreign sources, i believe that i do have a clear view on Chinese foreign policy, and learning more each day while your view is probably more colored and one sided. I do not blame you for that, but it's something we sould not neglect here.

You are right about the last part, white people, from the USA or North-West Europe are usually treated very well in China.

Hey, Robert. Glad to join your topic discussion. I am a medical student in China. After reading your article, I was really curious about 'red hair', so I did a little bit of homework. As far as I know now, red hair only occurs in a very small part of human beings who are most frequently seen in Northern and Northern West of Europe. Under my impression, it is a charateristic based on gene mutation and expression of specific proteins.  However, I think it is pretty cool to have red hair because currently many youngsters would like to pay a fortune of money to have their hair dyed, which is unacceptable for a doctor-to-be.LOL

The people who have red hair usually want to get rid of it. Most were bullied because of it.

If you're so interested, visit the city of Tilburg (The Netherlands). They have a 'red hair day' every year.

Really? That is not the case in China. Some teenagers would even pay to have their hair dyed red.  Does the red hair have any hidden meaning?

Fair enough~ In china, we spend more time in eating other than anything else. As you may know, we have Zongzi Festival, Mooncake Festival and even during the summe time, eating chicken has been a custom in my hometown.
