For You, a Thousand Times Over!

Before reading The Kite Runner, to me, there're few words represent Afghanistan as following: al-Qaida, Osama Bin Laden, Taliban, Kabul and Bamian Buddha. What's more, it would be that famous picture printed on the cover of National Geographic magazine in which a young Afghan girl with a pair of terrified eyes dressed in a crimson gown. That was my all impressions of this impoverished and stricken country bordering our nation.

The Kite Runner, a bestselling book in all time telling a profoundly touching story about friendship, brotherhood, unconditional love, flesh and blood, betrayal and redemption, caught my attention about there.

Amir and Hassan, a wealthy businessman's son and a servant's son, lived in different worlds, stayed in different social hierarchy were destined to have their totally different fates; however, all those factors did not become the obstacles which could separate them from being good friends. For you, a thousand times over! That's Hassan once told Amir, just like a promise to make, and Hassan would always be there to protect Amir from hurt and devote to him unconditionally even though fainthearted Amir betrayed him and selfishly broke his heart.

In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, Amir and his father had to flee to the United States, then he grew up and got married. As time goes by, something in his mind had never been forgotten, that childhood friend had embedded in his memory and never faded away. How to forget a person who's become or once were a part of your life? It'd be the hardest thing for every one of us to do; it's especially hard for both Amir and Hassan. One day, Amir got a call from a dying old friend, and then returned to his homeland under Taliban’s brutal regime, unexpectedly, he found some truths about the hidden relationships among his father, Hassan and himself. The journey of atonement began, and Amir finally conquered his cowardice, freed his soul.

The essence of this bestselling novel does not lie in the heart-warming storyline; it consists in reflecting humanity includes both good and evil, delivering the traditional values back to the reader's hearts whether in the Muslim world, western world or our Chinese society. By the way, you can learn some certain knowledge about Afghanistan history from it. All in all, it's an extremely well-written book worth reading in your leisure time.
