1."his bearing supple", it is a sentence to describe a man, but i have no idea about it. How is his bearing on earth?
2."with a smile as kind as it was firm" does that mean the smile just a courtesy combined with no question or doubt?
3.With white sheet stretched taut the two beds on either side of me, like almost all the others, were unoccupied. The two beds means the left and right one by my bed but was occpuied by the sheets but why the later sentence says "like almost all the others, were unoccupied"? No idea to understand it.

''His bearing supple'' means his position is variable.

''With a smile as kind as it was firm'' means a kind pretentious smile.

''With white sheet stretched taut the two beds on either side of me,
like almost all the others, were unoccupied'' means;
She was in between two beds with tightly stretched white bed sheets but there were other beds like these there with nobody on it.
