"Scaling the mattress", does that mean memories covering or filling the mattress?

"four day later" is that certain phrase or could be 5/6 day later in describing?

I completed with an ironic grimace as weak as it was bitter.
"as weak as it was bitter" does that mean the grimace containing the bitterness as trace of putting down the past?

''Scaling the matter'' means the action of moving wildly on the mattress. It is not the memory.

they start again as new later at any place in the world.

Yes, the reaction to bitterness of the past.

Note: It would be difficult to explain parts of a novel because to be accurate, you have to read the preceding parts and subsequent parts of the phrase.

thanks for your reply which match the novel context very well and next time if i have the problem i will try to refine the backgroud for easily conjunture the question.
