how to understand the behind sentence?
They first wrote history as opposed to mere annals.
the latter one:
Mr. Heathcliff and i are such a suitable pair to divide the desolate between us.
can i equally understand that means devide the desolate from us
what is the difference between two sentence,i doubt the usage of between and from is not only emphasised on the number of the people? i am totally confused how could understand the sentence clearly?

- At first they wrote a record of how things happened (History).
Previously, they what happened, year by year 1900, 1901, 1902 (Annals).
What they are trying to say is that they have changed from writing a history of may years in one book. Later, they wrote it year by year.

''From'' refers to one of them.
