Comparisons between the use of colors by Zhang Ailing and Zhang Yueran

 

Zhang Ailing, the most important woman-writer in the Chinese literary field during 1940s, features by using color images when creating her novels which can make readers both feel a sense of visual impact and further apprehend the novels’ implied menaings. The description of red color is especially lively. Zhang Yueran, a sensational figure among the 1980s’ writers or even among the Chinese contemparory woman-writers, has claimed her individual existence in Chenese literary field. She is keen on using colors, especially the red, to convey messages in her novels. Her red has both similarities and differences that of Zhang Ailing. This essay the way of attentive reading in the hope of comparing the same red words in Zhang Ailing and Zhang Yueran’s novels, analyzing different meanings that are voiced by the red, and describing the social reasons of their inclinations for red.

Though living in two different periods, Zhang Ailing and Zhang Yueran have some similarities in terms of style. The former’s novels have long been considered as a kind of literarure that is full of strong senses of colors. She has a special like for red and has depicted a lot of red colors throughout her works. One of the best new writers, Zhang Yueran, being in the habit of using red colors to express her senses of colors,. Some of her favorite red words are the same to the ones that are relatively used by Zhang Ailing. From the perspective of a reader, these colors used by them appear to own a lot of similarities or similar psychologies or reasons. They embody different psychological features represented by red colors in China.

Same basic red-color words

Zhang Ailing is using red colors at all times, trying to show a pictorical world to her readers. She has colorful and splendid words, such as scarlet, pink, peach, maroon,  crimson,etc. at her fingertips and write with facility, creating her novels as pictures. Once finishing reading Zhang Yueran’s works, you will feel that the whole colors in them are black and red. It seems that in this sophisticated world these words can convey her works’ connotation to a great extent. Pink, tangerine, deep red, scarlet, crimson, maroon, purplish red and so on can be seen everywhere in her novels. Both of them are adept at using colors.
