As a coach, he cared not only the boys’ performance on basketball but also on their studies. When he started coaching the team, he gave all the players a contract, he told the boys:”I am going to give you a contract, if you sign them, we are going to be successful…you get to be a winner, because there’s one thing I know, it is this, the losing stops now. Starting today, you will play like winners, act like winners, and most importantly, you will be winners. If you listen and learn, you win basketball games. And gentlemen, winning here is the key to win outside there. This contract asks you maintain 2.3 on average on your subjects, you’ll attend all your classes and you’ll sit in the front row of these classes.” Some of the players refused to sign the contract and left the gym angrily, some stayed to practice.

          Coach Cater started to teach the team. Before he taught them how to play games, he needed all the players’ condition levels reached his standard to do so.

Coach: “gentlemen, to the base line.”The boys didn’t move. Then he said loudly:”to the base line.” He asked the boys to do suicide (a kind of training, players run to the both base lines and touch the lines). He emphasized the importance of being punctual, he said: “if you late, you will run; if you give me attitude, you will do push-ups; so you can push up or shut up. That’s up to you.” So when Worm was late for 20 minutes, he did what he promised.

---------Coach:  “Then it is 10 suicides for the whole team and 250 push-ups for you.”

---------Worm: “this is not tract team, man.”

---------Coach: “nor it is a debate team. But you are right, and because you are right, that’s 20 suicides for the entire team, and you get the privilege of joining Mr. Battle of 250 push-ups of your own.”

-------Worm: “are you serious?”

-------Coach: “yeah.”

--------Worm:”this is bullshit.”

------- Coach:” good answer, Mr. Battle. Jonny tell him, what he want. Because you give such a good answer, and give the coach the attitude, you win the prize of 500 push-ups. You want to win the big prize of 1000?”

-------Worm:”no, sir.”

 And Mr. Battle did the push-ups reluctantly.

In the game with San Francis, Richmond Oilers lost their game. All the boys were frustrated in the rest room, and then came in Coach Cater.

Coach Carter:“Well, not the quite the story beginning, huh, not for us anyway, but you man played like champions, you never gave up, and champions hold heads high, what you achieved goals beyond the win or lose on the column of what to be read on the front pages of the sports section tomorrow, you have achieved something that someone use their whole life try to find. What you achieved is that never lose victory within. And gentlemen, I am so proud of you. 4 months ago when I took the job in Richmond I have a plan, and the plan failed. I came to coach basketball players and you became students; I came to teach boys and you became men. For that I thank you. If someone walks in the door right now and offers the coaching job in any school in the state of California, you know which team I choose?”

Worm said:”San Francis?” all the boys laughed.

 “I am just saying, man.” Worm added.

“Kenyon?” Coach Carter asked Kenyon.

 “Richmond.” Kenyon answered.

“Rich—what?”

“Richmond”

“rich—what?”

 all the boys said:”Richmond.”

 “rich—what?” “Richmond.”

 “ where do we from?”

 “Richmond.”

“What’s my hometown?"

 “Richmond.”

“What do we love?”

“Richmond.”

“rich---what?”

“Richmond”

The Richmond Oilers did not win the State Championship, but they won 5 college scholarships and 6 members of the team went to college
