These days, I saw so many graduates in my university. They are wearing caps and gowns, walking across the stage to collect diplomas, and, of course, listening to commencement speeches. They are busy at collecting their files, preparing for their new jobs or higher study in postgraduate career.
One day, I wrote a feeling in my QQ space “My Germany, I want to graduate.” intertwined with filled emotion. On one side, I was so disappointed about my Germany’s behavior in South Africa World Cup that I come up with this idea. On the other side, just because a communicating forum of some outstanding graduates was hosted, this impressed me so deeply about their behaviors and words that I would like to graduate, too.
However, more or less, can we find optimism toned down in grad. Most commencement speakers address a common set of themes. They tell us that we can do anything if we put our minds to it. The tone is designed to inspire us as we leave school and enter the workforce.
For example, when former US president Bill Clinton addressed the graduates of MIT in 1998, he told them, “All the possibilities of this new age are open to you. You are at the peak of your powers and the world will rightly reward you for the work you do.”
However, other people once said, “You can’t do whatever you want.”
Even US president Barrack Obama announced that the US was “still emerging from the worst crisis since the Great Depression.”
These commencement speeches are trying to teach us a different lesson--namely, that things will be more difficult than they thought they would be.
In terms of the employment circumstances, a survey conducted by 51job.com in April found that 59percent of respondents said their first job after graduation would pay as little as 1000-2000yuan per month .About 60percent said they were even willing to accept “migrant worker job.”
Just as the speech made by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper at Tulane University said,” I’m not saying you should take it easy and just see what happens. You need to outwork everyone around you. You need to arrive early, stay late. You need to make yourself indispensable--you should also probably get rid of those Facebook Photos of you passed out on Bourbon Street.”
“Learning what you don’t want to do is the next best thing to figuring out what you do want to do.” Though there may not have bright future and we are facing great challenges, I would love to say: I want to graduate!!!
