In many cities, the high speed rail way begins forcing its way into people's alternatives of transportation.
Intitially the news of replacing the "intercity railway" between Shanghai and Ningbo with high speed railway was advocated by the government, broadcast broadly and favorably by the media and applauded by those who need efficiency in their business commuting trips.
But months since its debut, it is still wrestling with the empty seats rate(more than two thirds) and operating with a sea of complaints from passengers for its unreasonably high prices and the high-handed practice of canceling the majority of the ordinary bullet train shuttles.
By comparing to the initiating of bullet trains or D-train, across the country a few years ago, the official in charge explained that the high speed railway trains, dubbed as the G-train, would be gradually accepted in the same way.
But having taken a simple glance at their differences, you will find that though the D-train charged a higher prices, they offered its passengers a faster speed as promised.Yet for the newly-born G-train, it's not that simple.Yes, indeed, the average speed of the high speed train can reach 300km per hour, peaking at 350km per hour at full speed.Yet the G-train doesn't go through the original stations of D-train and sometimes takes a longer route. What's more, many small stations that didn't appear on the D-train's stop list are included as the high speed railway stations, which greatly cut the trip's efficiency. Some of the G-train can merely arrive at the destination half an hour earlier or less.
So this unreasonable practice is playfully described as "higher price, same speed".
Personally, I uphold the general national strategy of developing high speed railway across the country and even beyond, since China, with the largest population in the world, has a great demand for human mobility, best demonstrated by the grand view of spring festival transportation, and the nationwide high speed railroad networks construction will serve as a powerful driving force for the country's economic development and provide tens of thousands of employment opportunities. What's more, if the whole programme proved successful, it will push China to the forefront as the leading nation in high speed rail-way construction, which will render the made-in-China high speed railway a popular brand worldwide.
But "he who would climb the ladder should start from the bottom".To realize this goal entails long-term efforts and a step-by-step manner.Recent response from the majority of passengers clearly deomonstrates that the railway authority jumps too high and runs too far in promoting the programme. It is not late, though, for the officials to review their plans and rectify some unreasonable policies. They should realise that they are a little optimistic and hasty as to the advancement of the programme and some adjustments are essential to be made to settle down the complaints and serve the needs if the common people. Otherwise, they may risk widespread unpopularity and even greater turnout losses in the future.
