Draw your sword out!

577 views. 2010-8-19 17:07 |

Scrolling through numerous web pages these days, I finally find something interesting to talk about.

It's a survey with the question

The reason why I refer to it as 'interesting' is that its result caught me by utter surprise.

73 percent of the netizens surveyed cast their votes against the idea, almost three times of those who support it.

I think this is not an idea coming out of nowhere.

Recent years has witnessed an increasing number of international or regional events choosing Chinese cities as their host cities. We have experienced the 'exceptional' Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, are now enjoying Shanghai World Expo, having operated safe and sound for almost 4 months, and will embrace the Guangzhou Asian Games in a few months' time.

Meanwhile, months ago, the 2010 World Cup, the great feast for the football fans around the world, was held in South Africa. With the harsh blaring echoing incessantly in the stadium and striking outcomes that went far beyond anyone's expectation(anyone is, of course, except Paul, the octopus), the breathtaking matches caught the eyeballs and held the heart beats of the entire world for 31 days. Even someone so amateur on football like me found it particularly interesting.

Its benefits, of course, were not limited in sports only. The ticket sales and infrastructure construction have boosted the financial revenue of the government and people and greatly quikened the modernisation pace of the country.

So in the light of its great benefits and popularity, some just impulsively propose, "hey, why shouldn't China bid to host a World Cup" and then we have the survey question given above.

Surprised by and curious about the number of opposers, I took a closer look at the comments posted below.

A few rough glances render me the explaination. And I believe it's a convincing explaination that can persuade most Chinese to swallow back their support for the bid.

It's simply because we don't have a strong national team......or we won't have one in the near future.

Having been hit hard by a series of notorious scandals and a succession of heartbreaking defeats, most of the Chinese football fans, if there are still any out there, are now on the brink of desperation. It is as if more scandal or shameful loss would emliminate this 'endangered race' forever. No wonder the idea of bidding for hosting a Cup that can never be won may lead to so much disapprovement.

But as an innocent optimist, I still have something to say.

There was a Chinese TV series reflecting the military spirit of the Chinese army. You can simply read the spirit from its name "Liang jian" or "Drawing Sword", which indicates that when you are confronted with an enemy stronger than you are, you should draw your sword out even if it means a certain dealth

The best example can be found from the football players of North Korea. Faced with the defending champion Brazil in the first match, they didn't take a full-scale defensive strategy.Instead they made full use of their own advantages and amazingly scored their first goal. Though they lost the match in the end, they won the respect from both the audiences and their opponent alike.

I think the Chinese football players as well as the Chinese public are in need of this spirit.

We are not a strong team.YES.

We don't have a strong team. YES.

But we can't do it now doesn't mean we can't do it in the future.

The next bid for hosting the World Cup is 8 years away. It is highly possible that if we try hard enough, we can make it in time.Even if we don't, we should at least draw out sword and do our utmost.Never take NO for an answer.
