A Contrast Between the Yangtze River and the Mississippi River

964 views. 2010-6-24 00:09 |

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and Asia, and the third-longest in the world, the Mississippi River is the fourth longest river in the world, and it is the largest riverthe longest valleythe most extensive area in north America process. As we all know, both these two great rivers as the longest river in the region, playing very important roles in the people” life and development. But of course, they have many differences, here I'm going to compare the similarities between the Yangtze River and the Mississippi River, mainly on compare their ecology along the river, the value of navigation, and the influence on culture and economics.

Firstly, the Yangtze River is as long as about 6,300kilometers and it acts as a dividing line between North and South China. It has abound resourcesand great potential. On one hand, the Yangtze River has adound water resources, it” s water area ocuppied 40% in nationwide, and the exploitable water power resources can reach 1,970,000,000 kilowatt, however, only 8.6% of it had been exploited, so we can certainly say that the Yangtze River has great potential. Secondly, it”s has abound mineral resources. There are 109 kinds of minerals, and there are 13 kinds in it”s 38 kinds of main minerals which ocuppied more than 60% of the reserves in nationwide. What”s more, the reserves of natural gas also occupied more than 60% in nationwide. But on the other hand, our human being have made serious pollution to the Yangtze River when we chasing fast –developing economy in recently years. For example, with the successful building of the three gorges project, many problems coming. Since the three gorgrs reservoir area begin to save water, the watervelocity slow down, water self-purification become weaker. But like in Chongqin, a large number of industrial waste make serious increasing of the discharge of wastewater along the Yangtze River, that’s a disaster. Besides, biology species is decreasing, underwater bed becoming narrower and so on. The 2,320 miles long the Mississippi River which has a very large number of tributaries drains all or parts of 31 U.S states including most of the Great Plains. It moistens the 41% of the American continent land and it has more water than any other rivers in the united states. As the Mississippi and the communist imbued with a flood plain have exuberance of natural vegetation, and relatively independent environment, it has more than 400 different types of wildlife resources and many rare kinds of birds and fishes. However, the Mississippi River disasters are frequent, As there are lots of rain in summer season, and most of the valley is plain, so over mount water causes flood in downstream which is narrower and flood brought much sand. Like the great flood of 1993. Flood bring a lot of harm to flood-dam, food chain and marsh and tourism resources. Both the two rivers facing great challenge on ecology.

Secondly, the Yangtze River is one of the world”s busiest waterways as well as the Mississippi River. The Yangtze River has long been the backbone of China’s inland water transportation system, which remained particularly inportant for almost two thousand years, its traffic including commercial traffic transporting bulk goods such as coal and manufactured goods and passengers. Cargo transportation reached 795million tons in 2005. The port cargo throughput was 4,408,000 tons, and it reached to  101,ooo,ooo,ooo tons ,  so it has successfully grown 229 times compare with 1949,

The yangtze river has owning the world biggest quantity of shipment in the great navigable rivers. And as executeing the opening-up police, foreign trade and container volume providing will keep increasing strongly. Also in the United states, dry branches the total mileage to 25,900 kilometers, and a canal with the great lakes lie and other drainage and constitute a large waterway transport network,.the inland water transportation is mainly depend on the mississippi river system and five great lakes, especially the mississipi undertakes more than 60% of the whole shippingment. A series of dams facilitate navigation for a steady stream of barge traffic carrying agricultural products from the fertile Mississippi Basin to the Gulf Coast, and like the Columbia River, most of the Mississippi also is a cascade of reservoirs. Most of its big tributaries—the Missouri and Ohio Rivers—have also been developed for navigation. These two big rivers Play a tremendous role everyday!

Thirdly, the Yangzte and the Mississippi effects our cultures and economics greatly. The Yangtze River is important to the cultural origins of southern China. Human activity was found in the Three Gorges area as far back as 27 thousand years ago, initiating debate over the origin of the Chinese people. And from the Han Dynasty, the establishment of irrigation systems made agriculture very stable and productive. It had made great contribution to economy. On politically, Nanjing which is located along the Yangtze was the capital of China several times, we coule see how much did our Chinese people depend on this mother river. What’s more, as we all know, China is a great country which has a lot of marvellous tourist attraction. The Yangtze River valley is just a treasure given by natural, for it has very rich tourism resources, and those where has been exploited already can be classified as” one line and seven districts”: The main stream of the Changjiang River tourism line, the Changjiang River delta tourism district, the scenic mountain in south of Anhui province district, the north and west of Jiangxi province tourism district, the south of Shanxi province and the north of Hubei province tourism district, the west and north of Hunan province tourism district, Chongqin ang Sichuan province tourism district, and the north of Yunan and the north of Guizhou province tourism district. There are so many many travelling resorts, like the three gorges on the Changjiang river, the west lake of hangzhou, huangshan mountain, zhangjiajie, lijiang and so on. We’ve  learned a lot of poems which were written by ancient poets appreciating its wonderful scenery, and we can see that we”ve got a sense of beautify given by the Yangtze from the old times.    While the Mississippi also has many stories. For example,William Faulkner uses the Mississippi River and the Delta as the setting for many hunts throughout his novels. And many of the works of Mark Twain deal with or take place near the Mississippi River, too. One of his first major works, life on the Mississippi, is in part a history of the river, in part a memoir of Twain’s experience on the river. Besides, the Mississippi River is the national cultural and entertainment leisure treasure. every year, only tourism, fishing and recreational the output will reach $214,000,000,000, and  providing 351,000 jobs. Just like in baton rouge, which is a city along the Mississippi, its museum of natural science and anglo- Aerican art museum, are the most attractive places, there are more than 4,000,000 tourists come to visit.

From what we talked above, we can easily know that both the two rivers are treasures to our human being, we should love them, exploit them and protect them. Expecting their bright future.

We usually compare the differences between oriental and occidental cultures, but we seldom compare the rivers. A very interesting article, is it your paper work?
