  The patterned lute , for no reason , has fifty strings ;
  Each string , each fret , recalls the prime years.
  Zhuangzi in his morning dream was puzzled by thebutterfly ;
  Emperor Wang entrusted to the cuckoo his springpassion ;
  Over the vast sea the moon shines , pearls are shedding tears ;
  On Blue Fields the sun warms , a smoke rises fromthe jade.
  This mood might have been a thing to be remembered ;
  But even then , it was already vague and lost .

Strings, and frets on this brocaded lute
Somehow let my thoughts wander back to my youth:
Even Zhuangzi, the philosopher, was amazed by the daybreak's butterflies
And the Emperor Wang smitten by the cuckooes singing of the springtime
Not to mention me being a sentimental youth then(加译);
Over the vast sea rises the moon so bright that the pearls are thus moved to tears
And the Blue Fields are basking in the sun so warm that the jades are hence intertwined with smokes
Not to mention me being a sentimental youth then;
Inspite of myself
This state of mind is all that is to remain.

Glad that you posted this blog to share your view of one great masterpiece and a version of translation.
However, upon reading it, I feel I wanna  try translating it another way.
李商隐in fact means 你伤隐(why are you hiding your pain?)
一弦一柱is translated as Each string , each fret 忠实,一字一译,这样好吗?无端--for no reason(I know they are equal, but is it good?)
Zhuangzi was puzzled by the butterfly,Emperor Wang entrusted...
Also word for word translation,do the foreigners understand?
Over the...pearls...jade, all the sentences are simple sentences, English places its emphasis upon logical connection.

Thus, with a splitting headache I translated the poem once again like a madness has hit me.
I hope you can share with me your opinions.
一弦一柱,数完了,也就是strings and frets.
无端,in English there might be no such thing as results without logical reasons. Somehow, I think, can do the trick. They argued with each other a lot in the beginning, but somehow they grew to be lovers.
For no reason好像秦Kui的“莫须有罪名”
华年就是李商隐的年轻时,用youth就可以,无需prime years,加上英语的美好时光是the prime time of one's life,用prime years太中式英语了。

所以我加译了not to mention me being a sentimental youth then.(其实同最后一句的当时已惘然是呼应的)
A bit tired, I guess that's so much for the explaining.

Thanks, actually last night I came back here in front of this computer with a splitting headache from a party with the foreigners when I clicked on your blog commenting on one piece of translation from a poem by Li.
乱我心者,今日之日多烦忧!Actually I wanted to write down here last night that"How come I feel so drunk and I wanna half create half translate this poem, just like酒后诗仙李白?"But I did not.

I woke up in noon today with a bad hangover, with a strong impulse I still wanna post my translation here, risking being critized by you. Emma is one novel by Jane Austen or someone else? I don't quite remember, but I know something about that, your name reminds me of literature.

I am not a humorous person, but I can be fun, I like to think, and sometimes I am kinda sentimental too. I was sometimes called 一休哥 by others for fun when I was in college, but surely I am not a wizard.
Thanks for your appreciation.

We could share in the days to come.
I like Charles Dickens's books the most. My Chinese name comes from his novel in the later part of his sad life. My English name derives from the Father of British Novels--Daniel Defoe, I like this author's unsinkable soul.
"Nothing is impossible" is your motto, right?
The motto that inspires me most is one remarked by my favorite painter Neil Bunchanan, "You don't have to be a great art attack."
Early in life he was turned down by the president in the art university, Neil turned around and walked away, right now he is a great aritst, and he often says this sentence to mock those who once belittled the talent of him.

I don't like drinking wines or beers. But sometimes I am forced to do so. This is the tragedy of men. Ri Haku(李白)can be admired by many guys, but he gotta suffer the bitterest pain a man got to suffer--Ri Haku's son was born to be stupid or nuts because his father had taken in too much alcohol, which had done harm to the infant's brain even before he was born.

I like to drink coffee. What about you. If you also like coffee, I guess, you and I, teacher and student, could be a happy couple together when we go on a picnic

The first kind of coffee I have ever tasted is Nestle, thus I could not separate myself from it, like a puppy love connection. I also drink Maxwell, and other unknown brands. Maybe it is three or four years since I first drank the coffees in the Canton Fair when I was working as an interpreter there, I thought the Latte and cuppochino were just great. Nowadays,even when I was willing to buy made-on-the-spot coffee, it aint taste that great.
