Lunch Ordering at the Office

Hot 3717 views. 2015-8-13 14:20 | individual, morning, process, Baidu, Office

This morning I ordered lunch food for my colleagues and me. It’s my first time to order from Baidu app and first time to order for a foreigner co-worker. The communication process wasn’t a little bit smooth.

I ordered two times at this app for four people, as two people could save 13RBM so I separated the order into two. After learning individual’s wanted mean, I ordered the first order and successfully paid it online. Immediately, I got a phone call from the salesman who said to me that one of the meals of BaoZi wasn’t available this noon and let me change another. Two ways to go: he could cancel the order and I ordered again, or I called him again to let him know what a replaced meal was. Because he had a Cantonese accent that was hard to me, and I was not familiar with its meal names, more badly, the app’s meal names were not the same as his recommendation, so I asked him to repeat names several times. He became impatient and I sensed it, so I said I’d call you later after I made a choice on app.

Then I ordered another two people’s meals. Then I asked our foreigner colleague to change another meal. He didn’t know what the exact difference among different kinds of BaoZi was and I didn’t know either. So my advice became a little hard to continue. At last he randomly selected one.

This unclear communication is partially because of my personal reason. I have the disadvantage of ineffective communication that I have already known. Practice more, think more and keep improving.

Can order meals from Baidu? I didn't know lunch can be ordered there. I don't think the problem is in your communications but ordering meals is no simple task because of the unfamiliar names used and personal preferences for food. I am very narrow in choice of food so that is why I am always taking similar meals. Previously I stayed sometime in Shanghai. I don't like steamed or fatty meals but in Shanghai, these are the standard choices, so you can imagine how limited my choices are. I live in South China so there are lot of choices for me.

Over here in my city Hong Kong, nobody delivers lunch. You have to go out, line up order and wait for your lunch, bring it back to office and eat, leaving only about 15 minutes to eat. Furthermore, a basic lunch box costs about Rmb41, so nowadays, the girls cook at home and bring their lunch to office. The male staff feels it is odd to carry a lunch box so they rather buy it.

We can't have decent meals during weekdays, so at the weekend, we go out and eat our hearts out at the lunch buffets which cost about Rmb90 to 120.

Ordering western foods are not easy if you are not familiar with it. Those restaurant manuals usually give a little information as they think waiters over there can help for orders. Some Asian food restaurants' manuals do a bit better than western ones as the Asian food manuals were attached with pictures that associated with the foods.

There is an app called Baidu Nuomi, you can order meals on it.
It's astonished to know that takeout meals are not popular in Hongkong. One day I'd visit this far-away place and experience this city.
A little bit dear for common people for daily meals in hongkong. The takeout generally costs RMB20 which includes several dishes and rice in ShangHai.
