Must Check after Writing

Hot 5783 views. 2015-9-2 11:53

Now I realize it’s a must process to re-read what you’ve written before publishing or showing to others.

Days ago, my leader asked me to write some comments for specific products on our site, and asked other team’s colleague Emma to help with me. After finishing, Emma gave her comments to my leader who asked me to check hers and switch it to a right format in excel.

When I began to read her reviews, I felt a little disappointed with her comments in the aspect of views, as she wrote superficially without deep thoughts. As she wasn’t new to this company, not like me, I had thought she could write down some personal comments with deep thoughts. Obviously she didn’t.

It’s not the worst situation. Her comments had lots of misspelling words, wrong grammar usage and double blank space between two words from here to there. I had to revise her every error one by one, there were one thousand comments there and I have been correcting her comments for several working days. So bad experience.

It’s an impressive alert or warning to me, I must read my every word after finishing writing. It’s responsible to me, more importantly, to readers.

It is indeed an alert to you, and to us all. I started my position in customer support months ago and a copy-and-paste working mode nearly made me forget the spelling of words. So it is indeed very important that we keep writing and double checking every time we post something. If not, we shall neglect the errors and keep going in this way. And later, we will develop a habit, and become another Emma, well no offence. So now, I dared not copy and paste my answers and I would like to revise some sentences or supplement some contents, that would be better than I just repeated the answer again and again.

Your words remind me of this, to be honest I didn't have the habits of checking my writings, everytime when I finish it, I will comment it without even think about it, I will learn from you and get rid of the bad habits, only develop the habits can you improve you writing skills

I have got myself into trouble because of my laziness in proofreading what I wrote, so it is better to read what we have written. However, as you know, nobody likes to read the things which we have written ourselves, so we assume there are no errors, but we often find errors when we read them over again. Proofread to avoid embarrassing mistakes.

However, I don't proofread my blogs here because this is casual friendly communications or writing, so we don't have to be so formal. You will find errors in my blogs, so don't mind it because I don't really proofread what I have written.

In high school, I wanted to write well enough that I could write something once and never have to edit.  45 years later, as a professional writer and editor, I realized that is, as we say, "a pipe dream."  As for spacing, we were taught to use two spaces after a period.  Today, most people and software use one space after a period.  Styles change, but from an editor's perspective, consistency is most important.  That is, use one or two, but not both styles in the same document.

I have dyslexia so I often write teh or (I just now type "ro" for or) mistype from and form.  As a result, editing is necessary.  When I wrote my frist (another erro) book of fiction, when I finished 60,000 words, I realized I didn't know how to write fiction.  I am still re-writing it (80,000 words now) but I deleted entire chapters and many paragraphs as "too boring."

Editing is a necessary evil.  The only time I might not need it is with a short poem as follows.

Editing

If you never edit
forget getting credit
