But in fact, from his appearance to his heart, he is a Chinese. He does things in Chinese pattern. He uses Chinese ways to think. He knows more Chinese culture than American’s and he honors and respects our Chinese culture. That is the reason why he got crazy when the American layer spoke ill of Chinese culture.

1.We can see a lot of culture conflicts in this film.

After Denise hit Paulo, Mr. Xu and Mr. Kunen behaved differently. Mr. Xu asked Denis to apologize to Paulo but he refused. So Mr. Xu hit Denis in order to show his respect to his boss Mr. Kunen.

     But Mr. Kunen could not understand it. He thought it as a twisted Chinese logic. After Denise spoke out the truth that Paulo said Mr. Xu was stupid, Mr. kunnen did not hit Paulo as Mr. Xu did to Denise. In America, if a child does something wrong, the parents will have a talk with the child. If parents hit children, that is a crime----child abuse.

     2. Denise’s grandpa told him: “Your father hit you because he loves you.”  There is an old saying: spare the rod and spoil the child.

       Then Denise went to school and hit Paulo. He said the reason was he loved Paulo. Both Paulo’s mother and the teacher could not understand it. But this time, Mr, Xu did not hit Denise. Instead, he said he would talk with him. He started to learn how to handle things in America way.

3. “ Gua Sha” is a traditional Chinese treatment for nearly all disease but the Americans think “ Gua Sha” is a kind of child abuse when they saw Denise’ back.

4. In China, parents love child is natural. But in America’s court, the parents have to prove their love. That makes Mr. Xu quite angry.

5. We Chinese people regard the Monkey King, Sun Wukong as our hero. He represents our Chinese traditional values and ethics. But some Americans misunderstand it and think our culture is violent and Sun Wukong is a stubborn and stupid monkey.

   The layer’s comment on Chinese culture really will make every Chinese angry. As I mentioned before, Mr. Xu said he want to be a real American, but in fact, he could not deny that, he is a Chinese. So he threw things at the lawyer although he knew he would make his situation worse.

6. Mr. Kunen said he could not lie at the court. When Americans are in court, they will take an oath to tell the truth.

But in our culture, we regard our family as the most important thing in our life. We can give up and even sacrifice anything to protect our family members. So Mr. Xu lied in the court hearing. He admitted that he did “Gua Sha” to Denise in order to protect his father. After Mr. Kunen knew the truth, he asked Janin why Mr. Xu told a lie. Janin said, because Mr. Xu is a Chinese.

We can see that if you want to live in a foreign country, you should know about the local culture and “do as the Romans do.” And also, as Mr. Kunen had “ Gua Sha” himself, he got to know Chinese culture. We need mutual understanding in culture.
