Animal Farm

Animal Farm is a masterpiece of George Orwell. The synopsis of this book is about the animals in a farm led by a group of pigs who are smarter than the others. They fight against Mr. Jones and drive human beings out of the farm. They seem to have their freedom. But after their victory, the pigs become the new rulers and make the other animals live ever harder than Jones’ time. The pigs control the mind of the other animals, so no one gets up and fight against those pigs. At last, the pigs learn to walk with two legs and dress like human beings. They collude with humans to exploit the animals’ labors in order to get benefits. Their Utopia is a dream that never come true.

In order to separate animals from human beings who they think to be evil, they established Seven Commandments.

   The Seven Commandments are:

 1.       Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy

 2.       Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings is a friend.

 3.       No animal shall wear clothes.

 4.       No animal shall sleep in a bed

 5.       No animal shall drink alcohol

 6.       No animal shall kill another animal.

 7.       All animals are equal.

But after the pigs hold powers,

1.       They make money together with their enemies--- human beings who go upon two legs

2.       They believes that wild animals like rats who only know stealing are also friends

3.       The pigs wear clothes

4.       The pigs sleep in the bed

5.       The pigs drink alcohol. They even sold the most hardworking and loyal horse Boxer to get alcohol.

6.       The pigs killed a lot of animals in order to strengthen their rule

7.       “All animals are equal” becomes “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others”. This is the most ironic one.

There is a Donkey named Benjamin. He characterizes most people. He is as smart as pigs. He can read and most importantly, he can think. He knows what is going on, and he knows what is right and what is wrong. However, he never talks. He never say yes or no to the policies issued by the pigs. He knows the pigs gained benefits selfishly and secretly. He knows the pigs changed the Seven Commandment. He just holds his tone and never reminds the other animals of those. The only time he shouted out the truth is when his close friend Boxer was sold to the slaughter house. But it is too late. The animals’ mind is controlled by the pigs. No matter what the pigs say, they will believe. They lose the spirit of questioning and they become benumbed and unresponsive. Do we feel familiar of this? Yes. It reminds us those unfeeling people under LuXun’s pen.

So our society needs those people who are able to and dare to give different sounds. Their views will remind us the problems of the society and make a society more reasonable. If we ignore or conceal those problems, they will gather and gain power. The consequence is  our society will collapse just like the Utopia of the Animal Farm.
