My first impression of Montreal

775 views. 2012-2-13 09:38 |

When a topic referring to my first impression of Montreal, the second biggest city in Canada and french - speakig world, is mentioned,  " internal struggle" is a quite clean expression in my viewpoint.

Precisely, " internal struggle" doesn't simply mean either excitement or depression but the alternation of them.

Montreal is officially declared to be a bilingual area but actually an English - French area ( but probably " French - English area " can be more favored by Quebequois, a french way to call natives ). Technically or basically, "bilingual" is used to define the place where two languages are regarded equally indispensable as used languages in the form of integration; however, as a matter of fact, the fact that the east part preserves French traditions obstinately and the north part reminds inhabitants of customs left by preceding English generations incessantly lays the confliction between the two languages perceptible. Consequently, such a situatuin provides new immigrants with the objective environment of learning two languages and English - French culture but, on the other hand, restricts them from being employed for language obstacle. Statistically, Quebec, the biggest city of which is Montreal, among all provinces, is where there is the largest unemployed population of Chinese immigrant around Canada, which leaves Quebec government worried but helpless so far.

Motreal is misunderstood to be an international city by outsieders but actually believed to be Canadian French world by insiders. Very heavy influence of Canadian French can be explained by historical factors and present facts. As early as 1960's, Front of Liberation of Quebec, in a deep belief in Marxism and worship of Cuban socialist revolution, has been pursuing to separate Quebec from Canada as independent nation only belonging to a pure " French working class oppressed by English capitalists for such a long time" until the military and political organization was anounced to be a terrorist group and  militarily attacked by Canadan and the United States after a succession of bomb attack had been committed to shock the world, but, finally, Canadian French, having a receding independence consciousness, traded for exceptionally more autonomous rights above other provinces and more attrctive welfare advantages. In today's Quebec, we also  can be aware of more power of Canadian French such as local officials' thinking it a big threat to their political career being proceeded against for not speaking French but English rather than not speaking English but French, learning English being under the pre - conditon that French must be qualified in Montreal and so on. As a result, welfare relieves new immigratns but the local preferrence to French fidgets them whose monther tongue is not French.

It is likely that my personal remarks on Montreal or Quebec is considered to be scetchy or prejudicious, but my frankness and historical envents can enhance my writing honesty and commitment and relevant value of referrence - Montreal is not heaven but not hell either, because of which immigrants from China fall into three categories: those staying in Montreal to experience what is exciting and what is depressing, those forced to be there with a great regret to be there and those returning to China to make a fortune with the help of Canadian citizenship. So a prudent attitude and decision must be adopted for immigrating to Montreal , because you are neither an angel nor devil.

Montreal is a boring city. The french speaking people are snobbish and look down on immigrants.
