Stories of Teeth

Hot 1715 views. 2016-5-20 11:47 |Individual Classification:Life abroad

About three years ago, my dentist told me, "You have ten decayed teeth." I saying nothing, surprise was written on my face. This induced my dentist to continue, "Yes, I know you brush teeth every day, but how did you do it? Were you ever patient to brush for like five minutes?" I surrendered. He asked me to lie down on a dental chair and then started to fix my decayed teeth, saying, "Life is the best teacher. If you take care life, life will take care of you."

I used to be a school kid who inclined to be so absent-minded as not to be able to take care of myself. When I was in Grade six, my PE class teacher taught us spurting techniques. When he was explaining how to keep safe when spurting, I did not listen. When we were exercising, I knocked my incisor against another boy's head when he was spurting opposite towards me. I fell flat on my back with blood pouring out along the ends of my mouth, and the sharp pain carved on my life-long memory. That is how I first lost my tooth after my baby teeth had been replaced, and also how I first learned to be a patient listener and a decision maker in favor of my life.

In the summer of 2015, I had a short visit to my father. One day father said at table, "I do not know why. I always have toothache." Hearing this, I made a call and had a dental appointment. A week later, I accompanied father to a dental clinic. When father was on the dental chair, his folds and gray hairs turned out to be noticeable in the lamplight that I turned my face aside and tugged at my sleeve, " Don't leave your dad alone any more." At that very moment, I decided to take father to Canada and take care of him all my life. That was how I first blamed myself as an irresponsible son.

Now I am still tethered to struggling with dental problems. The exposure of dental nerve deters me from inhaling fresh but freezing air in Montreal's deep winter, and also tears me away from a Hershey bar and maple syrup as if a mom kept saying, "No sugar, my sweet." Montreal News hints, "It may ruin your teeth staying up at night." My dentist warns, "Brush your teeth above five minutes." My neighbor Arthur prides, "My sister has teeth in pretty good condition because he has seldom bitten and chewed." I can not confirm whether Montreal News is reliable or whether brushing teeth for five minutes would injure my gums or whether it is true that human can survive not biting and chewing, but this is exactly when I came to be aware that it is a matter of a great importance to keep the habits in favor of health.

When I am writing this article, I hesitate about whether to ramble along my life memories or immediately communicate the lessons I learned from the stories. It is as much torturing to determine as rewarding because stories incline writing to digress and lessons tend to make readers dozy; however, not until weighing up the two ends can I realize that life is the best teacher.

You are so nice to warn us about ignoring warnings and advice. One mistake can affect our whole life. We can't be too concerned about everything, but we should be able and careful enough to know danger and predict what could happen to us.

I have always thought about things that could affect me in the near and far future. Quite a lot of things I predicted turned out to be true. Accordingly, I have plans for the future for things that could affect me.

As for teeth and dental problems. Almost everyone is affected by teeth problems and if we don't take care of it, it would get from bad to worse. Several months ago, my gums started bleeding when I brush daily. Eventually, the foam from brushing became red like blood everyday. A big tooth also became loose and about to fall out. So I went to a reliable dentistry to see what was the problem. The dentist advised me let them clean and disinfect my teeth and gave me some high quality tooth brushes to use. I did as they said which was quite expensive. A week later the problem became worse and there was my gums was bleeding even when I eat. I went to different dentists but none of them could cure me. Eventually I went to a very old doctor who said dentists do not have the professional skills. He then gave me some mineral pills to take daily. After 3 days my teeth returned to normal and no more bleeding. I have always felt dentists are money grabbing and I would avoid the dentists unless no choice.

Hello. It is kind of you to write such a long response. Thank you.
Yes, you are right: a minor condition may ruin our whole life. When we are young, we care about nothing; when we are grown-up, we care about anything. What is discouraging is that no matter what to do we win something and lose something. What is encouraging is that no matter what to do we learn something. This is life.

By the way, English is not my native language. If you discover something which you believe is wrong, please point out. :) Again, thank you.

I am studying history and politics in McGill University. I am quite interested in reflecting on minor things in our life because nowhere can the future be sensed and determined than through small histories. If we learn from history that we learn nothing from history, it would be a pity.

Well, it is very easy for me to write as English is my first language. It only takes me a few minutes to write it our but something thinking about the contents requires some effort. It is quite enjoyable reading the things friends write here as I cannot read Chinese and cannot understand Chinese blogs. However, I can speak fluent Chinese, Cantonese to be exact.

According to what you have written here, my opinion is that you have sufficient English ability and the things you have written is quite clear and pleasant to read. There is no real need to be too perfect in English. To be more perfect, all you have to do is have better vocabulary. You would also improve when your read and write more.
