Pride and Prejudice:What a marriage should be?
Pride and prejudice, as one of the most famous novel in the world, was written in 1813 by Jane Austine. The novel mainly tells the love stories of the Bennets’ daughters. All of them, not the five daughters but every young girl in town, are facing the same serious problem:How to find a rich husband to make sure their rest lives will not be a mess?
In this addition, different person shows difference. Most people want to marry a rich man so they don’t need to worry about their survive. And obviously, the first lucky girl in the town is Charlotte, Elizabeth’s best friend.Charlotte agrees to marry Mr. Collins just because he is not a poor guy.But in the novle, Mr. Collins’ wealth all comes from an old but rich lady, Lady Catherine. Mr. Collins does nothing but always flatters the lady. And that’s why a guy with no speciality get a not bad social status there is no exageration to say that his mouth helps him a lot.But no matter what a man Mr. Collins is, his fortune attracks a beautiful wife. At the beginning,Charlotte’s thought tells us something. It is no doubt that Charlotte don’t love Mr. Collins at all.
Charlotte herself was tolerably composed. She had gained her point, and had time to fonsider of it.Her reflections were In general satisfactory. Mr. Collins to be sure was neither sensible nor agreeable. But still, he would be her hustband – Without thinking highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the only honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness, must be their pleasantest preservative form want. This preservative she had now obtained; and at the age of twenty-seven, without having ever been handsome, she felt all the good luck of it.
The only reason for Charlotte to marry Mr. Collins is his fortune. She just makes a deal. She gets a rich marriage instead of a happy marriage. That’s her choice. And that’s the choice of most people in the town. But coins have two sides.
Lydia, the youngest girl of the Bennets, her choice makes everyone surprised. Her husband Mr. Wickham, a goodlooking but bad moral young man, gets everyone’s attention, including the smartest daughter of the Bennets Elezabeth. But time judges everything. Mr. Wickham elopes with Lydia unexpectly. And this episode let Mr. Wickham’s selfishness and avarice wholely appears. Poor Lydia, she abandons her family and all her friends to persue her love. But things don’t turn out the way she wants. And this affair also infects her poor sisters. At that age, nobody want to have relative with such a family.
The two girls,Charlotte and Lydia, one of them get a rich marriage, however, without love. Another one persues her own love and bring the whole family into a tragedy.
On the other hand, the elopement may not be so bad. Because I think Lydia and Mr. Wickham’s marriage is the turn point for Elezabeth and Darcey, our heros.
In chaper I, both of them noticed each other. But unfortunately, neither impressed good. For Elezabeth, Darcey is the present of prejudice and for Darcey,he never see such a pride girl. They even don’t want to know each other. And I think this part is the most attractive one in the novel. Just like two smart sporters have a explosive mental competion.
Darcey proposed to Elezabeth two times. But at the first time.he was refused. Actually I don’t feel surprised after reading his words.
“in wain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
These words definitely shows Darcey’s prejudice. And because of Jane,Elezabeth’s eldest sisiter, she refused Darcey firmly. She expressed how she hate him. This made Darcey almost crazy. And that’s why I say the marriage of Lydia and Wickham is the turn point for both Elezabeth and Darcey. It is exactly Darcey’s responsibility changed Elezabeth’s view. They began to understand each other.
In anticipation, all of them have a happy ending. The happest one should be Elezabeth. She fights for her love and insists her principle when finding her husband. She will not marry without love or just for love. She keeps reasonable from the beginning to the end.
The contrast between Elezabeth and the other two girls reflects the author’s view on marriage. The marriage should build on the base of both love and intelect. A girl should not marry a guy just for money. That will not be happy. But the girl who abandons everything in her life just to persue the dreamlike love is totally stupid. So I recommend this book to every unmarried girl, especially those condidering their marriage. Before making choices, think about Elezabeth.
