2.1 Completing the Landing Process (2)

In the Canadian Border Service, a warm, charming lady immigration officer went through the formalities with me. After she verified my passport and landing document, she told me she needed to consult her colleagues.

I observed they whispered for a few minutes. When she came back, she told me I needed to get a CSQ.

“What is CSQ?”I didn’t understand.

“CSQ is the Certificat de sélection du Québec. If you want to land in Quebec, which means you will become Québec resident, you must hold it. That’s required by law.” she explained to me.

“Don’t worry. Let me call somebody to help you. Since you have gotten the immigration visa from the Federal Government, you are eligible for CSQ. ” She continued.

She gave me a name and phone number after she called an agent in Montreal.

“I have made an arrangement for you. This person will give you an interview and issue you a CSQ.” She confirmed.

Although I felt a little disappointed, her excellent service made me very comfortable. This reminded me of some unpleasant experiences in China that I frequently encountered cold, arrogant and impatient faces in the Chinese Government Agencies.

This was something I didn’t expect to happen. I had no choice. It was still early. The return bus from New York City to Montreal was supposed to pass by the border at three o’clock in the afternoon. How could I spend the time?

I found a table near a window in a coffee shop. I was sitting there by watching vehicles slowly moving from one side to the other at the border. Suddenly I was inspired by an exciting idea learned from a Hollywood movie. “Why don’t I try to ask for a ride?”

I immediately took actions. First I needed to make a ride wanted sign. I used a red color pen to write “A McGill student needs a ride” down on a blank sheet of white paper. Then I sat beside the road and kept holding up the ride wanted sign.

About ten minutes later, one beautiful white car stopped in front of me. A sunshine Caucasian boy, who was studying at Concordia University in Montreal, would like to give me a ride.

One week later, I received the CSQ from the Quebec government agent after she interviewed me in person. I went to the border again. This time I successfully completed the process. One bus with the sign of “sorry, not in service” took me back to Montreal after I paid the driver ten dollars cash.

To be continued.
