A Summary: The Positive and Negative Impacts of Tourism

My professor gave two articles about the impacts of tourism, each of which contains over 1000 words, to ask students to write a summary. Below is my homework:

The Positive and Negative Impacts of Tourism
In recent years, tourism as an emerging industry, has been developing by leaps and bounds. Lots of profits has been brought into every walk of life, while lots of problems arise.
As a “smokeless industry”, the positive impacts are self-evident. First, as a new wave of economic opportunity, tourism promotes economic growth. It plays an important role in income, employment, the area’s balance of payments with the outside world, and the investment and improvement. Its effect can be felt in a single place, in a region, or even throughout the entire national economy. Second, it benefits travellers in relaxation and widening the horizon, thus satisfying social needs and enhancing mutual understanding for reaching a greater level of respect and confidence among all the peoples over the globe. Third, it helps greatly to raise public awareness of environmental protection. Many tourists become friends of conservation and provide financial support for resorts. Some species of plant and animal life have grown in volume rather than dwindled. Also the non-profit sectors — women’s societies, youth organizations, churches, and historical societies — has increased special environmental settings.
However, questions have come up about the erosion of resource assets, congestion, social conflict, and opportunities foregone, with people's concern of social, economic, and environmental costs taken for tourism progress. Consequently, negative impacts are revealed as follow. First, it's recognized that the positive economic influences of tourism have many costs. For one, new tourism attractions, facilities, and services place new stress on existing infrastructure; for another, public amusement equipment and land expansion make tourism land become pre-empting prime industrial sites, yet providing relatively less impact. Second, the invasions of masses of tourists can disrupt existing cultures and subcultures and produce congestion and competition for local services. Other negative social effects are observed: the weakened social patterns of leadership and political power, displaced local populations, a rise in divorce and crimes, the growth of frustration, resentment, and hostility, etc.. Third, the environmentally erosive qualities are now one of worldwide concerns. Tourism may frequently work against other human activities and long-range protection of natural resources assets. Mass tourist use gives rise to the wear and tear on historic sites. Worse still, thoughtless tourists contribute to visual pollution by littering and desecrating monuments with graffiti.

mass tourism should be gradually replaced by ecotourism.
