Three Types of Parents

Children as we are, we are intellectually very young and have not yet learned to be mature and stayed true to what we believe. We are what our environment and the people have made us. Parents are the persons who have been accompanying us, shaping us and loving us since we come to this world. So to a certain extent, which kind of parents can decide which kind of person you will be. In other words, parents have a significant influence on children’s growth. In my point of view, I prefer to classify them into three types: the monarch type, the servant type and the friend type according to how they show their love to children, which will make a difference in their life.

Those who are tyrannical, self-centered and very serious can be defined as the monarch type. As we all know, a monarch hardly listens to others and always shows his authority. These parents prefer to set rules for their children and force them to obey those regulations. For example, they may set a rigid timetable for their children without asking, and be extremely strict with them. No matter their children like it or not, they have to do as their parents ask because these are the things that their parents think are beneficial for them. Critically, these are the yoke of love and their parents are hurting them in the name of love. As a consequence of that, those children might be obedient or rebellious, forming the two extremes. As for the compliant ones, they may lack of courage and be anonymous since they have been accustomed to obey any kind of regulations or rules without questioning. Even if they have inspiration, they won’t speak it out. The rebellious might be challengers of all traditional social rules and customs. They hate to listen to others’ opinions and by default to believe that people are forcing them to obey. Even worse, they may have no consciousness about discipline and organization. These two kinds of children are tragic resulting in their parents’ tyranny.

Another type is the servant. These kinds of parents, by contrast, regard their children as emperors or princesses. Whatever they do, they hope to please their children by satisfying their excessive demands. Especially in China, one couple only has one child because of the One-Child Policy. They treasure children as their most valuable things, and even spoil their children. When their children grow up, they become self-centered, never caring about others and even taking it for granted that all the people should be around them and back them. What’s worse, once they make mistakes, they may blame it for others since their parents have been doing these for them from the very beginning.

The last but not the least, it’s the friend type. These kinds of parents are good-tempered and are always kind to their children. They treat their children as equal individuals and friends. They will communicate with their children about some serious issues, and on some principles, they will definitely stick to them, but try to discuss with their children instead of forcing them to believe in. Take this as an example, they will have a serious conversation with their children on being late for school, by sharing their experience when they were of the same age as their children. In this way they can tell their children what is wrong and what is right. It is much easier for children to accept that value.

Above all, there are three different types of parents which lead to various characters of their children. Of course, most of us would like to have parents like friends. If not, we must love them from our deep soul. Whatever they do can’t change the fact that they love us. Anyhow love is blind but also valuable.
