The Moon and Sixpence

499 views. 2011-11-8 22:37 |

Having read the book The moon and sixpence, I have got a lot to say. It is written by a renowned British writer W Somerset Maugham. The major theme of this novel is that Strickland, a British stockbroker abandons all his wealth, social standing and families in his forty years old, and then devotes himself into the painting career. Could you just imagine it? What will become of him without a penny in pocket and interpersonal relationship? And what will become of his families without the help and support of a bread-winner? But he doesn’t care in either way, and head to his painting wonderland.

To be sure, all of his families got startled at the news that Strickland resolved to leave his home and go far away to paint. Everybody had no clue, except the scandal that he fell in love with another woman, why he wanted to do that. So his wife asked his friend to Paris to look for Strickland in hope of knowing about the truth and finding him back. Yet that was not the case, it’s not that he had intimate relationship with another woman but he wanted to follow his heart to do what he likes. Obviously, he didn’t go back. The following years, he lived alone painfully, with meager income to buy painting brush and pigments. When asked whether he regretted his decision for abandoning everything to come here, he answered decisively: No, I never regretted it, because I can feel unlimited freedom and truly be myself and committed myself to painting.”

His works weren’t acknowledged by a lot of people. He didn’t care it at all. Later on, he tramped to a small, barren but traditional folk land where he spent his happiest years and produce many famous works. He became a renowned painter. All his past unflagging efforts were not in vain. How happy he should be, though his works and talents were acknowledge after his death.

Well, there is no doubt that it takes great courage for him to make that big decision, great patience and efforts to produce works, great tolerance to lead a painful life. But he did. I honestly appreciate his bravery and strength to carry on.

He is a successful person, though not having a complete family, considerable income. Everyone has their own life. Regarding success, it all depends on how they reckon the meaning of life.
