Several days ago Mary and I went to the East Hill, which is to the east of Xiashi, the city proper of Haining, Zhejiang. Xiashi literally, as the name suggests, means between the two hills, the West and East Hills, but the East Hlll is, somehow, less well-known to the general public. However, this situation is likely to change. We heard that the old buildings on the west slope of the hill were all demolished and had been made into a beautiful park. So we just wanted to see with our own eyes how it had been changed. It was weekend and the weather was nice and warm, just right for an outing there.
What we first saw was that the road between the West Hill and the East Hill had been completed, a very wide road. Riding on that newly built road, you would feel the distance between the 2 hills seems shorter than before. The famous store of Gaoyang Bridge Zongzi is just located on the side of this new road. At the entrance of the new park area, there’s a traditional stone memorial archway, which is commonly known as hill gate. Walking about 3 minutes, you can see the whole view of the foot and slope of the west side, where there used to be lots of old shabby buildings. You can see newly planted trees and green fields.
A zigzag path will lead you up to the top of the hill. About halfway, to our surprise, there is a manmade waterfall! Like us, quite a few people were also visiting the new park. Some children were playing in the water up above the waterfall. And stone bridges and traditional pavilions are dotted around. When you feel tired from climbing and turn around, most of the city is below within your eyesight.
Generally on a fine day, we can see the Biaozhi Tower in the distance on the top of the hill, even when we are far out of town. Actually it has become a landmark of Xiashi. So visiting the tower is a must for everyone who goes there. It is free of charge to visit the tower area, but you have to pay 10 yuan if you want to climb the tower and enjoy the wonderful view high up there.
The east slope remains its natural state. Yet you can walk on the path and enjoy the view of mostly villages and fields, which forms a sharp contrast to the west side. There're also pavilions and various benches where you can sit and have a rest. So it is really a wonderful place for young couples to visit and date at the same time.
