Please Come Back, H-girl!

619 views. 2011-5-8 07:08

About this time last year, a girl student ran away from our school, which was totally unexpected and unbelievable. This incident became the talk of town overnight, giving rise to concerns over school safety and various discussions about who should take the responsibility for the disappearance of the girl. Many people were sent to nearby cities to search for the girl and quite a lot of money was spent on girl-missing notices in major newspapers. All means that could be thought of were tried, but none had any effect. Fortunately, over one month later she came back of herself, saying she had been working in a Shanghai hotel. What a relief! However, even today we are still left confused and can’t help wondering: what has become of the kids today. The following is what I wrote then in my QQ.

Yesterday the parents and some relatives of the running-away girl came to our school again. They asked the school administers to return their dear daughter, who ran away without asking for leave and left only a brief note, saying to seek a life she liked. Actually, they made a lot of trouble and this matter has become a big headache for the school authorities. We heartily sympathize with the parents. It must be hard for them to face such a sad and unfortunate fact that their daughter is nowhere to be found. At the same time we also have great sympathy for the school, especially the principal. How is it possible for a school to guarantee the safety of all the students, thousands of students? And they've been trying very hard to cooperate with the police in search of the girl student. It's a school not a prison, and students have their feet and the freedom to walk around!

Please come back, H-girl! Don't you know how much your parents are concerned about you? Your teachers and classmates, almost everyone in our school, are anxious and worried about you! Don't you know how dangerous the outside world could be for a little girl like you? Even if you don't like the school life, there must be a solution to that issue. What problem can be so difficult or so private that it has to be solved in this manner? Maybe you feel you don't get enough love from the people around you, but love can be in many different forms. Love is more than nice words, cheap praise or money or gifts! Sometimes criticism even punishment can also be a form of love. Furthermore, love is mutual; therefore we can't just wait for or expect others to care for us. Life can be fun but can also be unfair or even very hard. That's real life!

Please come back, H-girl! We just can't stop thinking of you. You're a member of our big family. Please give us a call or an email or whatever! It's never too late to let us know where you are or what kind of help you need. Maybe you think you have grown up and have the right to decide for yourself and do whatever you want to do. I'm sorry, please allow me to disagree. You can have your own privacy and generally you can make your own decisions. However, don't you realize we are actually closely interrelated? You were brought up by your parents and helped by many people including teachers and classmates. Don't you think it your duty to make them free of having to worry about you! Living in this world we all have certain responsibilities for certain people.

Please come back, H-girl! We just can't live a normal life without you!

fortunately, she has come back.
i have no idea about the kids today.
but the truth comes out like this is not only responsibility of children, right?
education problem is a social problem.
we should do more communication with our kids, to know what exactly think in there deep hearts!

I am puzzled by today's kids.
They cry for freedom but they don't understand freedom is not  free of responsibilty.
Once I read from a book that teachers are recommended not to use  red-inked pens to mark students' papers for red crosses may hurt their pride. I was rendered speechless. After all, who would believe students, strong enough to intimidate parents and schools,  are actually too fragile to withstand red-ink only.
Anyway, I hear more news about students committing suicide because of the casual remarks of people around.
The school authorities give teachers lots of dos and don'ts. Finally, I find myself unable to make an impromptu speech in front of students. What if I say anything inappropriate or even hurtful to students?
What has become of me, the school and the world? Everything should have been much less complicated that they are.

What a spoiled girl!
However, such self-centered kids are seen everywhere in China now. And the reasons behind the phenomenon are easily uncovered. It is the education system that should be blamed for the freaky society. Owing to the only-child policy, children become the “apple of the eye” in their family, shouldering not only the expectations of their parents but also their grandparents, who have offered overdose of love, care and protection to their children. Under the current test-oriented education circumstances, both school and parents concern too much on the kids” scores; neglecting the moral education and character education which are supposed to be the essential education to a human.
As a result, facing such phenomena, we can not straightly reprimand the kids in the events, but ask ourselves, “Why did that happen? What makes our children so strange?”

yes it is not a simple question. definitely more communication is needed, but i think the education system and even the whole social environment are all to take their share of responsibility.

i don't know if you work with students, but can see you do know a lot about present-day kids. your analysis is reasonalbe and to the point. not every child misbehaves or are self-centred, but this phenomenon is not uncommon these days.  they appear capricious, but atually very fragile, as you said. how can you take their due share of social responsibility in the future? maybe the social atmosphere plays a vital role in this.

totally agree. what a sensible person you are! we can't help wondering: what is wrong with our society? can they take up the responsibility when they grow up?  joint action is needed. and comprehensive measures might have to be taken.

right you are. that is something we need to teach our kids before they enter society. what we really need are responsible persons, responsible for others as well as herself/himself.

Hope that girl has finally realized it's not wise to fly away from a difficulty, because there're still other obstacles around you. Only by solving one after another problem can we find our way out.

i share the same wish as you. after she returned, her parents decided to transfer her to another school. it was not a good thing, anyway.
let's wish she could learn a good life lesson from this incident and walk well in the future journey of life.
