A Funny Debate about Politics

532 views. 2011-9-12 11:17

Recently a female friend came back from a party and told us, still in excitement, that she met a nutcase who was brainwashed by the Communist Party. Seeing that everyone was listening, she continued, “I was so much surprised that the guy should insist that it is a good thing that we’re under the leadership of the Party, which I believe has got to leave right now.”

“You know what? We all rose and attacked him verbally. Actually we gave him a lesson on what freedom and democracy really is.” She said, obviously pleased with herself.

I said nothing, for I believed I would also be attacked if I said anything against her. Frankly, I have no interest in anything political. And I have to admit that I don’t know much about socialism or capitalism or multi-party system or whatever. Of course, I know freedom and democracy are nice things and should be our ultimate goals of human race. However, I also know that there’s no absolute freedom or democracy in this crazy world. If you could really enjoy the absolute freedom, then the freedom of others would inevitably and usually negatively be hindered. For example, if you were given the right to sing as loud as you wish, and as long as you please at night, how could your neighbors possibly go to sleep?

Secondly, no political system the world has ever seen is ideal or perfect. You might disagree and say multi-party system is better; at least there’s competition and they can mutually supervise. Allow me to disagree. It’s not necessarily as simple as that. Just imagine how much time and social/natural resources would be spent on party fighting and meaningless quarrels. I definitely agree everyone is entitled to have enough personal free space and should have the basic human rights that we are born with. However, we have to admit that we’re not truly “created equal”. I think of a blog I read yesterday, which says that the human society is very much like a human body. Different cells serve different functions. If every cell wants to be a brain cell, making decisions and giving orders, the entire body would be in chaos. I think there’s some point in it. In any society, you can try to be the one who makes decisions, but you have to admit not everyone.

I once read an article online about building a road in India. Almost everyone agreed that it would be a good thing to have that road built. However, when coming to some concrete matters, people had different opinions and just couldn’t reach an agreement. Therefore, they had to continue with their discussion and consultation. The result? You guessed it! The road that is sure to benefit everyone has never been put into reality in that area. So as you can see, democracy does have its own disadvantages; it’s just not a solution for all.

Then do we have to endure all of the injustice and corruption? It all depends. First, let’s face it; injustice and corruption exist in almost every society and nation. So long as greed is part of our human nature, these social tumors will never be completely eliminated. Yes there’re many problems with our government and our social system. And we do need to make our voice heard sometimes. However, we have to realize that every system has its own advantages and disadvantages.

With that agreed upon, we can move on to the answer to the big question. The only standard, if there’s one, is whether you are better off. It’s not very important who is in power. What really matters is whether they can make your life better. Looking back upon the past thirty years, we have to acknowledge that our nation has made enormous progress, whether socially or economically or politically. Honestly, we’re much better off than before. Historically, our country is in the fast lane of development now. In this respect, we should give credit to the Communist Party. So I believe any drastic change would not be in the interest of us common people.

As a common people, I think I have nothing to do with politics. Classmates rushed to join the Party while I showed no interest in it when I was in college. Most people apply to be a member of the Party because it is said the employer will give priority to you if you are a member of the Party. I guess my attitude towards being a Party member has been changed now.

sheena, i can see you are a honest true pure girl, your nature make you have no enough interesting to join our party. but to be frank, maybe due to my special career view sight, we must step into society oneday future, whether after two years or three years. growing up to each one is a certain process except you don't wanna work for the national enterprises or any system enterprises. surely difference between a party member and not.

maybe my words not suitble for you, but a fact indeed. everyone can't live in ideal dream, especially modern younger. you should condersider something for your bright future. certainly some think joining party not a "bright" thing. all depends on youself's attitude and choosing.

hehe, can I say you are super patriotic? I don't mean to offend you. In fact I don't like to talk about politics. To be honest, sometimes, our party leads the youth to become money-oriented now. I think this is not a good thing.

as an Italian citizen, I am completely unsatidfied with politics here in Italy. democracy is undoubtely a wonderful thing, but I think that nowhere in the world is it a solution to inequalities, poverty and the fact that a few people actually hold all the power. it would be a dream if only once the politician realized what they had promised in order to be elected!

I do not want to say that the party is better that our political system, but certanly both do not really care about the people!

if you've read some of my previous blogs, you might have known that i'm not as patriotic as you think. i could be critical also, even cynical. however, we should look at things from different perspectives and we have to acknowledge the facts. hehe.

as i said in the blog, there's much to be desired for the government. sometimes i'm also angry seeing the injustice and the negligence of the officials. however, if we look at the history, we should feel lucky to be able to live in this period of time. honestly, i generally don't talk politics. but what i heard triggered me to express my opinions. hehe.

actually the question i asked in the blog was from one of the American presidents. he was pursuing a second term, and he asked the people at a gathering, "Are you better off?" i believe if the answer is yes, as a common person, we should give them a chance. that's just my personal opinion. hehe.

I am not well informed about the American situation.. as far es Italy is concerned, the answer to the very same question would be "absolutely no!" the problem is that the people governing us simply do not bother asking! they just continue to pursue their personal interests despite people's need!

your thought always be deep insight. you wrote:"the human society is very much like a human body. Different cells serve different functions. If every cell wants to be a brain cell, making decisions and giving orders, the entire body would be in chaos." It is vivid and cogent in your argument. hehe~~~
For politics, no matter soicialism or capitalism, multi-party system or one-party system, the ultimate goal is the well-being of that country's citizens. whichever system has its merits and dismerits, the key is which one is most suitable for the actual situation. and there must gradually creat new problems with the development of society. The best way might be call for balance among many problems. as you said the society is like people'body, it is difficult for people to make every parts of the body to be perfect, such as if the arm develops excessively more quick than others,as a result, it might be became malformation. Thus, I think the key is how to balance among these problems in order to attain toward the ultimate goal. It seems to be difficult in practical terms ...... hehe~~ maybe sounds  self-idealization....

One of my roommates had the same thoughts with me. She never think she would like to join the party but at the beginning of this term, she submitted an application to join the party. I was about to submit my application but still take no action. Someone told us we will benefit from being a party member.

Yeah, we should be lucky we live in China, despite improvements  should be made in many areas. To tell you the truth, I know little about politics and don't know how to answer those quetions when we have the political test, so I often got low points. This term we still have the political classes about "Research on the theory and practice of socialism with Chinese characteristics". This is China. We cannot avoid learning politics.
Heihei. You must have received many blessing on teacher's day and mid-autumn day. Wish you happy and healthy everyday~

sensible thinking. i just cannot agree more with you on the point that the key is to try to strike a balance, utilizing the advantages of other systems. maybe that's the way to go. but we can never be sure. however, what we common people concern most is a better life.

frankly when i was a student, i hate that subject. however, since we had to learn the course, i tried to make the best of it. i don't know if they have made it more practical. no matter what, we should have independent thinking.

sooo glad to know that we share the same opinion. to tell you the truth, i feared that some people might have this impression that i was speaking for the Party. actually, i always try to think  independently and objectively.

As a matter of fact, as common people, we don't have much to do with politic, but our exsistance and better-off do have close connection with it.

From your words, I can understand and deeply agree that we should take different angles towards a problem. Nothing is absolute in the world.

I entered the party in the colleage. Actually quite honored at that time for limitated memebers. Considering the benifits right now, from the sppearance seems opposite because of the work I am embarking on. If working related to govenment, surely it will benifit a lot. However, we couldn't comment the importance of the party just from ther appearance. Its real meaning still exsits and forever. China's fast develpment owns a lot to the leadership of the CPC.

i guess you must have been an excellent student back then. hehe. i was surprised to find myself talking about politics. to tell the truth, i don't like some of the pracitices of the cpc. however, we have to admit the progress they have made. it is a fact, as simple as that.  one should learn to observe and think independently and objectively. enjoy the rest of the day!
