What Can We Learn From Steve Jobs?

1812 views. 2011-10-7 10:11 |

First of all, I have to admit that I was not familiar with this great man. I even had to baidu to find out who he was when I first heard of the news that he had passed away as CEO of Apple. Honestly, I’m no fan of iPod or i-phone or any other Apple product. However, I do know that their products are cool, unusually cool and they have kind of become a symbol of fashion combined with high technology. The problem is that these nice-looking devices are not for everyone to enjoy using; their prices are also fashionable enough to make you keep a respectful distance. In spite of that, young people have been crazy about their products. Gradually we come to realize that some things are so powerful so trendy that no one can possibly stop them from becoming popular and finally seeping into our daily life.

Steve Jobs is without question a great success, but in a special way. His mother is an unwed college student. I doubt if he knew who his biological father was. He was adopted by a working class couple. And he dropped out from university. Against all the odds, he finally made it and became a legendary person. We all know stuff like that. But I think what we should pay attention to is his “odd” qualities.

He is the first person who has successfully combined art with science. To many of us, science is serious and noble, not something entertaining. However, Steve made us know it is not only possible but could be done so beautifully. All of their products are works of art, so to speak. Once you use their product, you’ll have to admit it is something that you really need. More importantly, they are so cool so lovable that you might never want to separate from them.

If you have listened or watched one of his lectures, you must have found one impressive thing that he so persistently stuck to: do what you truly like to. He said it again and again that if you have not found the thing that you really love, keep looking; once you’ve found what your inner heart wants, just do it and never give up on it. Not everyone can be a great man, but I guess we can be the type of person Steve advocated. Only when we do what we really like can we bring out our potential and do the things to the best of our ability.

One of the best suggestions he gave to us youngsters is: Your time is limited. So don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma. Maybe you’re still young, but the time will come when you will be cleared away for the new. We are brought up to respect authority and theories that are widely regarded as truth. Sadly we have got used to all of those and just take them for granted. For instance, we all believe that we have to listen to customers’ opinions if we want our goods to be well received. However, Steve was bold enough to put forward a different voice: Customers may not know what they really want. Sometimes we have to give them choices. Search your heart and ask: Do I always know what I really want?

Successful and world famous as he was, he wished to stay hungry and stay foolish. He told the audience in his commencement speech at Stanford: And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. One can never make progress if he thinks that he is already smart enough. One can never be truly successful if he thinks that he has learned enough. So let’s remain humble but keep a passionate and determined heart. As Steve Jobs put it in his lecture, don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

i believe he is one of the greatest minds the world has ever seen. he managed to change our life in his special creative way. his successful story will definitely inspire us later generations to make our due contributions in our own unique way, either small or huge, for creativity knows no limits.

yes he is unquestionably a great man who deserves our respect. even while delivering his speech at Stanford, he himself believed he was cured of cancer. however, it was actually incurable. life can be cruel. keep our fingers crossed.

It is inconceivable that Steve Jobs somehow managed to dodge the sound waves produced by your sonar when he and his company and their products are in the spotlight of mainstream media all the time.

Two days ago, I read an article tiltled "Steve Jobs, the greatest Arabian". According to that report, Steve's biological father is a Syrian professor, who is now teaching in Syria's the third largest city. The professor said that Steve's American grandfather wouldn't accept him, so there was no way of forming a normal family with his mother. As a result, they had to consider finding a family who would like to adopt Steve Jobs. Professor also said that Jobs knew him, but showed no intentoin for further contacts. He only sent a message to Jobs on his birthday. He explained that he didn't want to be taken for thinking of Jobs's success or wealth. It's understandable that Steve Jobs kept his distance from his biological father given that the latter didn't fulfill his responsibilty as a father and took no part in his upbringing. (believe it or not)
Everyone is sad about the genius's somewhat early death when they expect him to bring them more novel devices, because "Isad, therefore I am".

I admire the great man not for his achievement or reputation, but   for his philosophy of life. I once want to be a man as Jobs said, let alone others' noise, but I have no so much courage. In china, I should consider too much, such as my parents, my relatives, friends and so forth. There is so much pressure that I can't do what I really want, but the things everyone think it is right. gambling courage never belongs to me.
I have no much choice in my life, just schooling and then find a proper job or something. I should go to school, from the fundamental school to college, and now to be a graduate student. if I don't do that, everyone around me will blame me. But I can understand them, it is exactly right that no education backgroud, no bright future in china.
I realize that I have no so much courage like Steve Jobs, but I have the same agreement that don't pursue what others want me to get, but follow my heart and then I will be successful finally. And I also want to add s sentence to it. it is I should be tough and tensile at the present stage in china, with the balance between what I want and what I have to do.

so he knew who his biological father was. thank you for this information. yes it might be best to keep some distance. he could have used to having a foster father. it is hard for one to develop close feelings towards his real father if he was abandoned for whatever reasons.

i think i know what you're saying and how you feel. i totally agree that it's easier said than done to truly pursue what you really want or lead a life that you really wish for. sometimes we do have to compromise.
however, i also think the belief/dream in our heart should never be changed, if you believe it is right or what your innner heart wish to have. sounds contradictory, right? yes a little bit. but it is actually feasible. you can compromise on many things but on some key issues we shall never yield. the good thing is our society is getting more and more liberal and tolerant. personal space is basically guranteed.

yes, you are right. But there is another problem that too many students do not really know what they want, most of my mates are in the similar condition.

each human being is a mystery. even we ourselves don't know what we actually are. according to Steve Jobs, one way to find out what we really want is to ask what i would want to do if today were the last day of my life. all external things like fame wealth pride expectations would all fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

I love a sentence of Stev Jobs (I don't know the orignial words): When we can empty our desires and fears and face up to death, we can naturally follow our hearts.

nice  to see you again. i guess your life must have been good and full of fun. just call me Rich. we are all lovers of english and this common interest brought us together and became friends.
you're right. Steve Jobs did say something to that effect. and i believe it's true. if today were the last day of our life, our over expanded desires for material comfort, for power and fame would fall away, leaving only the truly important matters.
