The Feel of Driving a Manual Car

441 views. 2011-12-9 19:33 |

It is nearly two months since I bought a Skoda Octavia. After the initial trouble I had driving it, I finally got familiar with the “personality” of the car. It is now rare for the engine to stall. More importantly, now I can drive leisurely and begin to feel the fun of driving. Of course, compared with veteran drivers, there’s still a long way to go. However, I’m glad and content that I’ve made such progress in less than two months.

In the beginning, I felt very sorry for myself that I had bought a manual car and believed it was the worst decision I ever made. Now my attitude has completely changed. I’m sure I have a mature more-balanced view on whether to buy a manual or automatic car. If you don’t care much about money and just want to make life easier and more comfortable, then an auto should be your choice. If you belong to the type of people who pursue the feel of “artistic” perfection, then a manual would be the one you dream of having.

For those who want to buy a manual, you have to be mentally prepared that the first one or two months could be very difficult, even frustrating. I believe everyone can go through that stage successfully, but if you are no longer young or not so quick-minded, you should think twice before buying a manual. However, once you’ve got familiar with it, a manual car can be even better. The key is whether you’re willing to “suffer” in that period. Manual ones are never inferior in any sense. The taxis driving skillfully on the street are all manual ones. Do they ever feel uncomfortable while driving? The answer is self-evident.

The most obvious advantage of having a manual is money saving. You can pay about ten thousand less. Generally a manual car is more fuel efficient, thus reducing your running cost. The biggest advantage is the feeling you have while driving. After the first stage, you enter a brand-new world. You can feel that everything is under your control. You believe it possible to make driving into the state of perfection. You may feel you’re just part of the car and your reaction is just automatic. That auto reaction is, of course, different from the mechanical automatic control. Comparatively, the biggest advantage of driving an auto car is simple and thus easier to drive, especially at the beginning. However, as time goes on, you would be bored, for you have nothing much to do. To some extent, you feel like a puppet or a low IQ person doing something simple repeatedly all day long.

Wow, drive leisurely---that's like a dream to me. I could never drive leisurely. it would be a miracle if i drove 30 miles without getting a heartattack! I hate driving, either auto or manual. anyway, coming to driving, my IQ couldn't be any lower.

Hmmm...Seeeeee? I told you so. Haha. Glad to note that you are starting to enjoy leisurely driving and the satisfaction of driving a manual transmission car. Gradually, the changing of gears is nothing much and you get used to it. You will notice that your car picks up speed much faster than auto transmission. You also save quite a bit on fuel if you operate the transmission sensibly. You would notice more benefits of manual transmission later.

Note that once problems arise with the automatic transmission transmission, it would be very expensive to repair while manual is easier and much cheaper. Automatic gear involves difficult hydraulics.

There is also much less preventive maintenance cost for Manual. Automatic transmission is easy to overheat when driving longer distances in the summer.

Yes, driving automatic is more comfortable, especially in congested traffic, but you soon used to it. Once the automatic transmission starts failing, you would be glad you choose manual, plus the money you saved on purchasing the car.

Happy driving buddy.

You make me a green-eyed monster again. It's true that I stall my car less often than before, but I'm far from driving leisurely.  Whenever my friend sits by, he is amused at the way I seat myself behind the steering wheel. According to him, I sit upright and crane my neck, trying to get a better view of what's in front of the car. I never take what he says seriously, because I know I have real problems: parking almost kills me. I don't mind other drviers cutting in or cutting me off, for a novice drvier like me can always wait ( what else better choice do I have? Anything is better than an accident. ) I do fear parking. Whenever I reach the destination, our hard time begins. My wife walks round, giving me instructions as to how much space is there in between and how far I can move. She has become an indispensible part of the navigation system and parking sensors. Nevertheless, parking is still difficult. I usually have to try four or five time before I move the car into a parking space. I wonder when I will get the hang of it so that I don't have to feel sorry for my wife and tyers.

A manual transmission picks up speed faster than an auto trasmission one? How do you make it? I mean you have to change up gear by gear, right?  More often than not I just changed to the second gear when I found myself left far behind by other drivers. And still others blasted their horns, complaining that I've blocked their way.

hi, buddy! so you also bought a manual. i'm so much impressed by your sense of humor. actually i experienced all you went through. and sometimes i still do. after all we're both novice drivers. as for parking, it is also my big headache. fortunately there's a big parking lot in our school and if i don't come home too late, there's always enough parking space in my residential area. when i go downtown, i usu ride my motorcycle. i drove there several times, but had to park a long way from the place i want to go. those commercial districts were not designed for car-driving customers in the first place. have fun my friend!

hi, Sunny! good morning!
Yeah, you're right. I just can't agree with you more. once we are used to a manual transmission car, it can be even better than an auto! not only the benefits of saving money, but also the feeling we have while operating the car.
now the consumption of fuel has dropped dramatically. and it could even burn much less if driving long distance on a expressway, which is really cool. hehe. have a wonderful weekend!

Well, one does not need to be an expert to comment on this topic. I acquired knowledge about cars by buying cars and daily usage.

Pick up speed here means accelerating. It is hard to overtake other cars in automatic transmission because the car needs to sense the speed and then change gears accordingly, while in manual gears, you can quickly change from 1 to 2 quickly as you gain speed.

Well, after graduation from university, I worked for two years and found working for others does not have satisfaction and cannot secure my future. Few years ago, I established my own trading company which is now going well and I am quite happy.

Same brand--Skoda, mine is Superb, too big, I can't control.
Or I drove so slowly that never over 60 miles/hour.

really? i think of the saying: great minds think alike. hehe. however, yours is better than mine, though the same brand. at the beginning i used to drive at less than 50 km per hour. and it is not until recently that i began to use the fifth gear occasionally. safety is the top priority, after all.
