I’m Broke Again

886 views. 2011-12-25 11:02

One of the frequently heard phrases nowadays is “I’m broke again.” They’re mostly young people who entered the workforce recently. With the new year of 2012 approaching, money has become a daily topic of conversation. “Hey, is the year-end bonus this much?” one asked. “How can I pass the days with such a small salary?” Another one exclaimed. “It looks like we’ve got to tighten our belt in the coming New Year.” Someone echoed.

It is understandable that people complain about the pay they receive with increasing living standards. It seems that prices of our daily necessities are going up every day and our salaries remain stable for too long. We have to put food on the table. Life seems not easy for everyone nowadays. For those who have begun work for only several years, the perception could be more obvious with a limited beginner’s wage.

As a mid-aged man, however, I feel content with everything I’m able to get. I have to make it clear: I’m NOT rich though I am Rich. I’m actually the only bread-earner of the family. My wife gets a minimum salary as a laid-off worker and my son is still in university. You can imagine what kind of life we lead with the income I get. There’s no secret solution to speak of. The only way out, if any, is to control our budget and make every penny count. I’m proud of myself that we’re living a decent life and that most of my dreams have been fulfilled. I especially take pride in the fact that I bought the current house five years ago with borrowed money and a housing accumulation fund loan from the bank, which proved a very wise decision. And recently I purchased a car, as you may know.

As a country boy, I was taught to be frugal and hard-working. When I was in senior high, I always tried to spend as little as possible, for I knew my mom didn’t have much money for me to squander. I still remember having rice with only soy source and boiled pig fat for lunch at school. Even while in the teachers’ school, I had my lunch box steamed with two pieces of bacon brought from home as a meal. I believed that once I graduated from high school, I was supposed to be financially independent.

When I received my first paycheck, which was only 39.5 Yuan, I felt I was one of the wealthiest persons in the world. I had never had so much money that could be used as I wished to. I remember telling my mother, “Mom, I have money now. You brought me up and gave me money for various needs. Now that I’m earning money myself, you don’t have to give me any money. It’s time that I gave you money. You deserve to lead an easy life from now on.”

Even after I got married, things were not so easy, as a matter of fact. First we lived in an extra workers’ dormitory room for about one year. Then the factory arranged that we share a two-storey apartment with another couple. Several years later, we were allowed to live in a 36 square-meter house. It was as late as in 1997 that I bought my first house, which was only 79 square meters. We lived in that condominium for about ten years with a lot of nice memories. However, we sold it, for we had to return the money we had borrowed. To tell the truth, in the whole process, I hardly used any of my parents’ money. All the money was clean and hard earned.

Of course, all this would have been impossible without my wife’s support and cooperation. She is a truly cute lady with few words. I don’t know how to describe her in words. Thoughtful, understanding, hard-working all seem to be insufficient. Honestly, we’ve never felt we’re poor and leading a miserable life. On the contrary, we seem to be content and happy, and hopeful that life is getting better and better, which has proved to be true.

I know that youngsters today were raised in a totally different environment. The world has changed so much. We cannot request them to lead a life as we used to. However, one thing should be the same: One has to learn to be independent. No matter what, we’re the ones to determine our future. Only through hard work can we truly gain and fully appreciate a wonderful life.

So glad to come back and read your new blog. You are really an intelligent and decent man. As a small town girl, I have the similar story. I've never been close to real poor, but I had caught up in financial difficulties. Soon after I got married, my husband's business went on the rocks. since our first house eat out most of our savings, we didn't have any cash left to provide a buffer against that. Neither of us wanted to ask our parents for help. So days were really difficult. Back at that time, my total income is around 2500 per month,  and we had to pay the bank 2300 yuan per month for house loan---you could see the problem. I had to work as partime translator, ghost writer to make both ends meet. Now my husband has a comparably successful career and I don't need to work on the sideline. We are not rich, but we can lead a comfort life. like you, I'm proud of what we've earned, and satisfied with what we've got.

though there is an age gap, we seem to have a lot in common. :-) sometimes i wonder: if parents don't help buy a house for their son, would there be a girl /girls willing to go through difficulties in a rented house with their son. i'm talking about the reality, not anything personal. things have changed. however, the post 80s or 90s have their own challenges: they have to take care of their parents on both sides. we don't have the tradition of sending senior citizens to nursing homes. Happy New Year!

I have the same feeling that you have.
I am a girl of 1985’s, I have a younger brother, and both of us went to university for comprehensive education.
When I graduated from university, I promised to my mum, I will gave you RMB 10k as a gift when I came back home for Spring Festival in my first graduation year.  And my mum told me “I am content if your financial independent”.
Fortunately, I got the National scholarship when I was a senior student, RMB 4k in all.  And I deserve to get it.  No one could understand when other classmates were in bed and I still did the students’ work in Student’s union office.  I kept 1.5k for myself for looking a job after I graduated, remitted 0.5k to my brother as a gift, and the rest was for my parents.
After graduation, I left my hometown Nanjing for Shanghai to achieve my dream, and for some reasons, I stayed in Kunshan instead of Shanghai.  On that time, my salary is 2.2k per month, fortunately, our company has the dormitory, and all meals are free.
I really would like to buy a pair of good boots before I went home, but after consideration, I gave up, I told myself I need to save money and gave RMB 10k to my mum, my brother-in-law can’t understand, the time was in the beginning of 2007.
When I went home for reunion with my family before New Year Eve, I gave RMB 10k to my mum, and she felt very happy, my mum and parents are not easy, their action influenced me and my brother a lot.
And now, I’d like to take care of them, though they don’t need at present.  Most of their new clothes that bought by me.  And on my mother’s 48- year-old birthday, my younger brother and I bought a golden necklace together as a gift for her.
Both my younger brother and I were married in this year.  I gave a big “Hongbao” to my parents to congratulate my younger brother’s wedding, RMB 10k again.  And by the day after tomorrow, I will go back to Nanjing to reunion with my family, and on that time, I will give a pair of golden eardrop to my sister-in-law as a late marriage gift.
I respect my mum and dad all the time, without their hard work and persistent, no today’s Jennifer, me, of course, I would like to thank my husband and myself, although we afford a house and a car in Shanghai, but we still work hard and frugal in our daily life.

You told me a wonderful life story. very impressive, indeed. Your story touched my heart. i always admire those who make great efforts to realize their dreams,  people like you. i believe your parents must have been very proud of having such a nice daughter. parents' love is unconditional, they never think of expecting to receive anything in return when raising their kids. however, i'm sure when they see the gifts given by their children, whatever it is, or just an understanding act, they would be more than happy. what  really matters is the thought behind it. and it is something that can not be measured by money or any other standards.
so nice to meet you here. have a good evening. and a wonderful new year!

Hello, Mr rich (suppose I could address you this way). You certainly tugged at my heartstrings, but I am not going to recall the hard years I've spent as a teenager in the country. I am more interested in you name since you said that you are rich but not rich. I am richer and luckier than many years ago but I still wish that my son brings me better luck and greater fortune. I named him with Chinese characters denoting luck or fortune. People describe that name as typically chinese and I agree. I soppose you parents, like many poor others  must have named you the same way. Based on my wild but not totally  unreasonable guesses, your Chinese name might contain characters  like fu or gui?.

hi, my buddy! i don't know, actually, what i should call you. Lao Lu? or Louis? or Mr Lu? hehe. anyway i believe the impression i have that you are a nice person. it must be pleasant to be your colleague. to tell the truth, the name my parents gave me has nothing to do with fortune or wealth. when i was in college i chose for myself an english name: Francis, for i admired Francis Bacon so much at that time. however, when i began to work, many of my colleagues called me Rich instead of Francis, for my family name is Fu, meaning rich. gradually, this name became better known than my original name. and i was glad to accept it, for it gave me good feelings being called rich, though i'm not rich as a matter of fact. BTW, Happy New Year!
