Being a teacher means huge responsibilities. You can make your own decisions on what you’re going to do in each period, but it doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want to say. Being a human, you have all kinds of feelings like everybody else, but you’re not supposed to show them freely while standing at the platform, let alone to be capricious. You’ll have to adjust your moods or feelings even if you’re actually not very happy. The forty-five minutes means a lot to the kids, who are looking at you with expectant eyes. What you say in class can have a great effect on them. The effect can be either harmful or beneficial throughout their lifetime. If you’re moody or just not very positive or cheerful or encouraging, students will see it soon after you open your mouth.
First of all, wear a smile. No matter what bad mood you’re in, you should shift and forget all about it. You’re supposed to be cheerful happy and, if possible, energetic. Scientific research has confirmed that one’s mood can greatly affect one’s learning efficiency. To make the learning process effective, you’ll have to create a pleasant environment. Believe it or not, one’s moods are contagious just like common colds. Before you know it, your mood has spread like ripples through the people around you. It is your own responsibility to deal with it, not something somebody else should try and fix. Your bad moods could have a negative impact on the kids you’re to teach and help. Medically speaking, negative emotions can have long-lasting effects on one’s physical and mental health. On the other hand, joy can also be contagious, to the advantage of everybody.
Second, never complain even if the kids don’t do their homework or don’t perform as well as they should. The reason is simple: you cannot expect them all to be excellent students. You can criticize them but should never truly get mad about it. Just let them know the possible consequences of their actions.
Third, do the job in a smart way. Let them feel it’s actually not that hard to learn a foreign language. Show them it can be fun and enjoyable learning the language. Give them hope that I can also do it if I try hard enough.
Last but not the least, be supportive and encourage them. Praise them whenever they give a good answer or make progress, even just a little bit. Always try to find the shining points which might be hidden on them. And provide chances for them to shine while using the language. Let them feel how nice and cool it is being able to use the language and appreciate the beauty of it.
