Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

2015 views. 2012-4-17 17:08

This afternoon we were asked, at a training program, to set an English exam paper. For the writing section, we had to discuss and finally come up with specific requirements with the picture given. As a rule, one possible version was to be provided. My work is as follows

以下图为素材,命一书面表达材料(含参考答案)

In the picture we see an adult wrapped up like a newly-born child. Beside lies a plastic nipple. We can also see some Chinese characters above, which literally mean: “never walk, and then never fall. So I’ll always stay inside like this.”

I think this illustrates some people’s belief that if I always stay inside my comfort zone, there’ll be no risk or danger in my life. And they seem to be content with this kind of lifestyle, unwilling to accept new challenges in life.

I don’t think it is a positive way of living. You might have less trouble in your life, but at the same time, you lose lots of opportunities to see the world, to expand your horizon, and more importantly to become a better person. If you readily challenge yourself, you’re constantly improving yourself. Even if you fail, you also benefit from the mistakes you made. However, if you never try new things, you’ll never learn.

I believe every word you said. It's just sometimes, not that easy. I guess that's a human's nature to place safe. The world outside of our comfort zone might be exciting, but also a bit scary. we all need some courage to step out of it.

though being a teacher for many years, we find it hard to set a good english test paper. and we used to ignore that part of teaching work. sometimes we just copied some from the internet or somewhere else.
actually we looked at the same pic from different angles. some suggested learn to be independent, others said do we overprotect our kids...
i think you're not alone with that opinion, me included. yes it IS a bit scary but sometimes we have to. the outside world is exciting and so wonderful, why not go and join in? hehe. have a good evening.

More than a decade ago, in order to pursue my dream, I left my family and went abroad alone. In those days, in fact, I was not scared at all -- my burning desire to become an artist gave me tremendous courage and tingling excitement.

I learned from a series of lessons for positive psychology given by a harvard professor that there are comfort zone, stretching zone and panic zone. it is through constantly exposing ourselves to this stretching zone that benefit us the most.

I was quite shy and timid in university.  I had suffered severe panic attack when it was my turn to give a speech in front of the class, I was so scared that my body was trembling and i could virtually hear the sound of cracking of nerves in my brain. But English was my advantage, after giving a few speeches, I was actually walked in the stretching zone and turned out to be quite all right.  Hope my experience won’t bore you and I think it would be helpful to introduce the concept of stretching zone to your student.

Thank you so much for introduing the concept of stretching zone. honestly, never heard of that before. sounds quite reasonable. yes we can all change while growing. to a larger extent, the growing process will never come to an end. if we are bold enough to take the first step out of the comfort zone, we'll get into the stretching zone, get used to it and finally live in a larger circle of life. your experience is just a good example.

I think there are two definitions for the phrase "comfort zone"...One is like what you described in the picture...a safe zone that you may never fall...The other is the zone fits your principles...you could live your life the way you want and ignore other poeple's words...

The idea of stepping out of your comfort zone is to challenge yourself and try new things. i believe one of the driving forces for society to develop is the insatiable desire to explore unknown world. however, everyone has his own way of life, which he/she believes to be the most suitable. hehe, thanks for sharing ideas. have a good day.

Thank you for your generous compliment. Actually I wasn't too young when that opportunity knocked at my door, but luckily, not too old either. hehe. I totally agree that "when we're motivated by our great dreams, we're fearless." Looking back over my life, motivation has really done wonders to me.
