A Senior High School Student’s Confession

873 views. 2012-5-12 15:39

Recently I feel really happy, seeing that teachers are afraid of students. Now that education has got industrialized, we students have become consumers and teachers naturally service staff. We’re here to receive your service not to be criticized or maltreated. Have you ever heard of waiters/waitresses beating consumers? Only consumers may deliberately make things difficult for the waiters/waitresses in this world. We students now are God and teachers are naturally kind of slaves.

I once beat a teacher myself, to tell the truth. I was reading a novel in class and she wanted to stop me and tried to confiscate the book. I would not allow her to take it, of course. In the process I gave her a good kick. She cried and left the classroom. Later on the teacher in charge of the class told me to apologize to her and to write an article of self-criticism. When I refused to do so, he got angry and didn’t permit me to enter the classroom. Who gave him the right to forbid me from having classes? My dad came to the school and argued with the principal. The head teacher had no choice but to allow me to enter the classroom without making an apology to the teacher.

We students all like to hang out and play but teachers just don’t understand that. They always try to force us to learn the boring knowledge, saying it will come in handy someday. They ban us from doing this or that. How is it possible to maintain a good relationship with us students? The school doesn’t dare to publicize our exam results in fear of hurting our self-esteem. But the school usually makes known the total scores of the classes those teachers teach. Every semester, the school will ask us students to evaluate the teachers’ work. Those who often criticize or always have us do this or that will be given the lowest point.

Teachers want us to study hard for the purpose of entering a good college. To enter an ideal university seems to be the only life goal. Some teachers even say that we’ll regret it if we don’t study hard now. We’ll never feel sorry, to be frank. What is the point of entering a college if you can’t find a good job after graduation? How poor and helpless you teachers look when you ask us to do our lessons! The salary you earn, I bet, is even less than the money a migrant worker makes. That is the upshot of one who studies hard at school. Therefore just stop trying to fool us into following your steps. What we want is freedom, without any restrictions.

We are often educated by teachers that we should behave well and never violate any rules and laws. Will people like teachers be respected or successful in society? I doubt it! Our parents told us that we should be aggressive in this world, never afraid of anything or anybody. Here I want to thank the experts who made the Law on Protection of Minors. Thanks also go to those who understand us and help us students, who don’t want to study.

The original article is from the Internet. So it should not be taken as true. However, it does reflect some real situation in today's education.

This student's confession renders me wordless. Anyway, it reveals the conflict between the teachers and students. Are they doomed to be foes.Teachers think what they do is really good for the students and is an action showing they are being responsible.
However, students don't think in this way. They never stand in a teacher's shoes. I can't imagine how sad his teacher will be if he/she reads this.  Since Rich, you translate it here, who do you think is to blame for it?

It's not the first time for me to hear that people compare teachers to waiters , if so , i want to say the teachers are the most beautiful waiters while the students are the  happiest consumers. We can't deny some exceptions , but most students and teachers are willing to be good friends. Who can content the need of everybody ? What is freedom? What will the world be like without any rules ? Being a good teacher is more and more difficult . I am more and more doubtful about the education at school.

Who do i think is to blame? it's kind of complicated. It involves so many aspects. first of all, the majority of students are very nice and well motivated. however this phenomenon does exist in schools.
on the one hand, the general trend, i guess, is getting more and more liberal in education, which means a new type of relationship is to be formed. teachers have to learn to adapt to the new situation. that is, they should try to understand, and respect students, instead of just giving orders. on the other hand, students should also know that respecting people is fundamental to their life, especially those who are helping then. broadly speaking, the overall environment is, more or less, to blame. You'll never succeed in education if you only rely on schools. students, as humans, observe, consciously or unconsciously, judge and imitate.

very reasonalble and to the point. to tell the truth. many teachers have complaints. yes it's getting more and more difficult nowadays to be a teacher. you'll have to make administrators and parents satisfied, you have to keep a good relationship with students. on the other hand, you also have to prove that you're a qualified teacher by producing good academic results of your students. the fact is students today are quite different from the ones in the 1990s or earlier. no matter what, i believe teachers should be respected if society is to develop. some people have a very strong sense of safeguarding their own rights, some even over-sensitive, but fail to realize that mutual understanding is always needed.

I can't agree with you more. No matter who we are, we all need to take the initative to make some changes, which can enhance the relationship between teacher and students.

i don't know what you're referring to. the reasons for some students runing away vary. i don't mean that schools or teachers have no reponsibility. as far as the incident is concerned that occurred several years ago in our school, the student did it completely of her own accord. many people were worried about her safety, not only parents teachers and fellow students, but those who didn't know her in person. her parents came to the school, and made lots of trouble. You know what? she was working in one of the hotels in shanghai. by the way, she was one of the best students in the class, academically speaking. the fact is that you can always run away from school if you want to. after all, schools are not prisons.

The day when " students become customers and teachers service staff" comes and hence the end of human civilization. A society in which the disseminators of knowledge and history do not have the respet they deserve bodes ill for its future. Children who don't have respect to their teachers have no awe to knowledge and thus no awe to the society he is going to fit in, which would definitely blind him to the complexity of the society and tirgger his misjudgement on himself. Children are the hope of tomorrow, the would-be backbones of the future. The reason for the continuance of our human civilization lie in our endless trustworthy offsprings. Those children are the last ones we can count on.

feel exactly the same. it could be a tragedy if knowledge and its disseminators are not respected in our society. hope the fine tradition that teachers are highly respected in our society will continue and pass on from generation to generation.

Isn't it absurd that the student could "give the teacher a good kick" without being suspended" from the school?! Who gave that student the licence to break the law or the student conduct rules of that school?! What will the world be like if it is populated by people who are not respectful and knowledgeable citizens?

I found this article in one of my QQ groups. probably it was made up by someone working in the education circle. obviously it is a little stretched. however, i believe it does tell us a lot about the real situation in schools. we are undergoing big changes in many aspects of society. even some traditional values are under test/challenge. i guess we have to take a relatively flexible attitudes. however, i firmly believe some fine traditions should not be changed or ignored, such as respecting teachers and attaching great importance to education.  have a good day!

Judging from the tone and the quality of the writing, I do feel the article is probably the work of somebody who hope to have his/her voice heard. Anyway, I certainly believe it "tell us a lot about the real situation in schools", too. Disrespectful and problematic students do exist in all societies. Here in the US, teachers also face some similar situations ... Teaching is a noble and challenging profession which requires great dedication and courage. Without the support of society, the protection of law, teachers, who start their career with a sense that their devotion is meaningful and can yield great personal satisfactions , would feel vulnerable, become disheartened and burn out by the inevitable teaching difficulties. So, I truly admire and appreciate those teachers who stay strong and positive, and skillfully handle their career... oh, by the way, is there any teachers union in China? The teachers union here is quite powerful.
Take care.

So you're in the States? you mentioned studying abroad, but i didn't know when and where. i once stayed in Minnesota for 3 months on an exchange program. i think one of the biggest advantages is that it would enable you to see the world from different perspectives. enjoy your stay!
i cannot agree with you more on this issue. quite a few teachers do have such complaints, frankly speaking. i just did the translating. yes, disrespectful and problematic students do exist in all societies. there's a teachers union in every school here, but they usu don't handle problems, if any, concerning teacher-student relationships.  teachers are expected to "digest" all of this.  this kind of problems do exist, but the situation is a little exaggerated in the article.
it's warm and sunny today! i like spring time best, though theorectially speaking, we're already in summer. cheers. have fun!
