In Which Situation Are You Happier?

457 views. 2012-6-5 19:56

Yesterday I came across a picture of a well with a person inside at the bottom of it. Under the picture are some small Chinese words, meaning it is a misfortune to know that the sky is much bigger than the well; it is bliss to believe that the sky is no bigger than the well. I’m not sure what message the painter wants to convey, nor do I know what others think about it. But I feel there seems to be some point in it.

In China we often say, “Don’t view the sky at the bottom of a well like a frog does.” The implied meaning is obvious. It’s not wise to blindly accept everything; instead we should look beyond the horizon. We should never be complacent about what we achieved. There’s always someone out there who is more knowledgeable, more skillful, more insightful or just simply better than you. The pursuit of getting better and better could be endless.

It is just this insatiable desire that makes our society develop continuously throughout the history. It’s nice and good to be able to realize our full potential. However, we have to admit that we all have limitations. We need to work hard, even fight for our dreams. But the fact is that we do need to rest occasionally. Honestly speaking, not all our wishes can be realized,

If the man in the well had no chance to get out, would it be better to keep him ignorant? Imagine what kind of life he would lead if he knew that the outside world is really wonderful but that he had to live in the well and could not escape in any way? As a teacher, we meet all kinds of students. It is just natural that some of them are extremely intelligent, some just average and some a bit slow. Everyone is unique and has his own advantages. However, academically there’re always some students who feel very difficult to keep up with others in certain subjects, no matter how hard they try. Can we tell them that they’re hopeless because they are born less smart?

Whatever dreams we cherish in your heart, the fundamental purpose is happiness, which is mostly subjective. We should have dreams and work hard to make them come true. However, the dreams should be reasonable. And most importantly, we should have fun in the process. In other words we have to learn to enjoy the process of pursuing our goals. Don’t always compare with others, compare with yourself, the you in the past. So long as we’re improving day by day, we should be content and happy. Never fall into the trap of wishing to gain something that is actually beyond your reach or just not feasible, and then living a self-inflicted miserable life.

I have ever read a story about frogs. Some frogs wanted to jump out of the well and see the world outside. They tried several times but failed , then other frogs began to say that they couldn't succeed ,so the frogs began to give up one by one except the deaf frog. I want to say no matter how large our sky is , what we should to do is to enjoy our sky, try to be ourselves best, learn to be grateful.

A frog would be happy with his own happy sky, so long as he is leading a simple and contented life. Unfortunately, a life of human being is filled with happiness and sadness, success and failure, love and hatred, trauma and healing both physically and spiritually, up and downs, and all the vicissitudes of life. We wish life is simple and happy all the way to the end. But it is just a utopia never exist in reality.

As you reasonably put, happiness is the fundamental purpose of life for most people, but a frog with a limited sky would never be happy when reality of the world setting in, a limited mind with a self-absorption disposition would be quite at loss or even overwhelmed in facing of the complexity of life, the natural feeling of jealousy, attacks of seething hatred, self-abnegation, self-hatred, loss of hopes, vanity and futility of life.

The journey of a life is just a blink in the sense of the universe, everyone is bestowed with nature-given gifts, and the potential of all the greatness of the world. a mind with a desire to explore the world, an openness to seek the knowledge, the longing for a happy life, the wiliness of putting efforts to unleash human potential, would embark on the journey excitingly and happily. A broad mind thus obtained would deal with human problem more objectively and on a higher horizon. I wish more and more people would try to enlarge the mind the maximum possible, let the winds blow freely upon it from every portion of the world. A mind as large as the world would be profoundly happier than a mind limited to it’s own narrow space.

every coin has two sides, as we often say. yes you're right. one thing we must learn is to learn to be grateful. i didn't mean to say that we should live a lazy life without any ambitions. the point is what the pursuit is all about.

thanks for sharing your ideas. you're one of the most insightful people i've ever met. i appreciate your analysis, very impressive. yes an open and broad mind is an ideal state and sure to help realize our full potential. What i intended to say was that as a human being, we need to look at ourselves/others objectively. one's potential might be beyond imagination. however, it is rare and under unusual circumstances. after all, as i said, the fundamental purpose of our pursuit is happiness. as with everythig, the key is balance. i don't know if i've made myself clear. maybe i'm a little too conservative, which might not be good for young people. but people of different ages do have different opinions.

The happiness comes from the contentedness. I think it is better to chart your own course, other than be jealous with others.

trying something far beyond our reach may not be a wise idea. yet we sometimes have to force ourselves a bit or we never get a clue of what we can really achieve. so i guess it's all about the balance thing. we need to do some adjustment while sticking to our cherished dreams.

Hi, Celina!  you just said what i really meant. yes balance is the key here. we would be amazed at what we actually can achieve. however sometimes we have to face the reality. it all depends on the perspective you take. may our dreams come true!

Haha, my predominated thinking made me focus only on one side of your writing, totally ignored your central idea, I should be graded a point zero if I were taking an exam. Yes, you are right, due to the genetic or biological heritance, family background and upbringings, the space of development for some people may be smaller than others, but if they act wisely, undauntedly swim upstream against powerful genetic, social and cultural current and they would find their freedom expanding, self-esteem elevating, growth accelerating, and happiness deepening. Just like an old saying goes, a clumsy bird flies earlier.

i think we should shake hands across the huge space. hehe. i cannot agree with you more. in daily life we often see people arguing excitedly. however, if we take a deep look, usually we can find they basically hold the same opinions. they're only focusing on different aspects of the matter. the point is that we can have a better understanding of the matter after sharing ideas or even arguing. that's what really counts!
