Who Is the Thief?

Hot 2727 views. 2013-10-18 09:51 | concerned, Recently, another, several, trouble

There have been several theft cases since this semester began. In one dormitory, two pairs of jeans and two pairs of sneakers of famous brands got missing a month ago. Recently in another dormitory, more than 200 yuan RMB was stolen. To some people, it is not a big deal, but it did cause some trouble to the school as well as the students concerned.

We made some enquiries. For example, when did she/he last see the article/money? Who was the last one to leave? Did anyone return to the dormitory during the evening self-study? Did they find anything/ anybody suspicious? But no valuable clues were found so far. And the matter is still under investigation.

Schools can’t guarantee the safety of students’ property, but we have to do something about it. I believe precaution and a sense of safety are the most important. There is one thing in common in these theft cases: all the lost articles or the money was placed casually, either on the bed or somewhere you can see once you open the wardrobe. In our school every tenant is provided with a key to the door. However, in one case, they left a key on the top bar of the door frame, just for convenience. Every dormitory building is staffed with a worker in the daytime. Still, we can’t rule out the possibility that someone from outside entered the dormitory and helped himself to things he thought valuable. One of the girl student said she saw two footprints on the windowsill at the end of the corridor. Are these cases going to be unsolved mystery? Very likely, but if we had a strong sense of security, things would be quite different.

The theft happened more than once, so it's gonna happen again.
Lay traps for them to come again. Everyone has to be on alert or even deliberately place dummy items like an paper stuffed purse to catch the culprit.  Nowadays, cameras and intruder alarms (Rmb 20 each) are so easy to set up that even a novice can do it. It should not be too difficult to catch the thief unless he is smart enough never to return. Once he is caught, put him on public display, shame him then see if the police is interested in giving him a good time.

It looks more like an insider job because an outside thief would not be so bold to take such carelessly placed items, but cannot rule out outsiders too.

Haha, good idea for catch thieves.
Sunny, I think your colour may have been changed from white to yellow now after you have stayed in China for a such long time. Installing camera in school will be raised privacy concerns, especially at students' living areas. Of course you have no problem to do that in China as there is no such Privacy Act over there. So it works.

The chances of a thief who is an outsider or insider are fifty-fifty. Because China is a big country with its largest population in the world. The gap between the poor the rich is widening.
You are right, we should not just focus on the particular theft and should pay more attention to build up the sense of personal security alert. Let those careless people make aware of the risk of placing their personal items unattended, because it will be attracted more thieves come to the school. These not only put other people at risk but also threaten the public safety. Also sending a strong message to the people who think their "rich enough" to afford to lose some of their belonging, tell them this is a stupid thought and it will only reflect your personalities are at low level, nothing can be felt proud.
I think you can try to contact the student association and suggest to launch a campaign about this issue.

Haha... love you humor. Yeah, they don't call me Banana for nothing. White and Yellow all in one. Well, quite often we have to sacrifice a bit of privacy to protect our privacy and personal items.

Yes, it is more likely to be an insider job. it is too easy to enter, for everyone has a key and sometimes they even forget to take the key out of the lock. so the first priority is to educate them to be security minded. thanks a lot.

Thanks for your good suggestions. one's awareness is the most important. money casually placed either inadvertently or on purpose is attracting thieves. they do need a lesson.
