On the bus, I sat on a seat next to the aisle in the back. Now you can image that I was at a higher level than those who sat on the front of the bus and could see clearly about what everyone was doing in an overall perspective. Soon, a young person came in and just went through to me and found a diagonal seat in front of me which was also next to the aisle. He was no more than 30, and at the beginning I saw nothing special happening.

When the bus passed two stops, he began to lean himself toward to the aisle with his left hand stretching to a man's brief case who was in front of him. That man must be very tired because he was taking his nap (especiall during the holiday, he seemed still to have to work), and that brief case was not so zipped well. In that condition the man did not take any cautiousness and just put his brief case on his legs. That must be the scene the young person had already observed for a while. I felt not well about that. Should I do something? When he tried to get through his left hand into the brief case, maybe the zip was not so loosened well enough, so he got trouble going through it. All of a sudden, the man probably felt something wrong, he gradually headed up. The young person seemed to feel that immediately pulled back softly as if nothing happened. But the man more or less got the disturtance and understood what might be happening, so he suddenly looked back. All could I saw was the young person acting well that he was postioning by heading down as if he was alseep.

Action failed. After that, the young person got off in the next stop. Everything went smoothly in silence, and the man stayed well.

We often come across these situations where it is hard to decide what action we should take. When we raise an alarm and alert the victim, we could be attacked, but if we keep quiet, we could be seen as encouraging crime and dishonesty. My tactics are to wait for the safe time and right chance to act. The victim could be losing important ID and loved possession, so we cannot just let it happen. I think you would do something if the thief really stole something, but in this case, the victim did not lose anything, so let victim decide what to do about it.

I myself had my wallet stolen on 3 occasions on the bus in Guangzhou because of my own negligence and dumb mentality. Once a guy behind me even tried to pull away my backpack which was under the bus seat I was on. Thereafter, I ensured that nothing could be taken from me so easily. Yes, a bit paranoid but better than regret.

Yes, such a scene we can meet at some time. I also met that wallet stolen in two cases, and later I am more cautious when I am on bus or in some other public places.
