In about three weeks, many senior high school students will take the nationwide exams which are very vital for every one of them. It will probably change their destinies by entering different universities, colleges and specialized schools.
My nephew is now also facing that problem about which major and which school that he should choose. We respect his choice, what can we do is to provide some of our suggestions. From his application, I see many majors he chose related to mechanical design, computer science, and applied physics, accounting, etc. As he majors science in high school, so many of those he applies surely are all his interests. Anyway, I just believe he can do well on the final exams. Whatever the result is, it would be fine.
Many will complain the major they chose is not what they really like. Or, they were allocated as the transfers from other departments where they lost the qualification to gain an offer out of the severe competition of application. It is lucky to study the major as one likes, but not everybody meets that fortune. Most of them cannot find the interest and then even think the future is all the mess since they just have the wrong major.
Now, I just find it is totally wrong if we assume the wrong majoring choosing a thing of bad luck. The fact is most of us, or almost of us have many chances to choose what we will like or are likely to engage in. When we failed to have an ideal major, we also feel fine to major other subjects. Make full use of time in the school to equip ourselves.
Every year there is a large portion of students graduate from school who will find a job which is not so strongly connected to what they major in schools. An English major student might choose a job related to English, while there are also some others that could nothing to do with English he or she is about to choose. Some of my colleagues they majored physics and medicine, now they are doing investment and financial management. I am told a friend who majored biotechnology and now becomes a programmer and has a successful career of his domain.
Once, I read a short English article. I still remember the last sentence in the last paragraph with the main gist: “The purpose of school is to help students to learn how to study.” That means a student in the school should cultivate the habit of self-learning. This is particularly important while we are easily to neglect. Many of them still do not know how to learn and what exactly they should do in the school till they are at the commencement. This is awful. That makes them uncertain about job hunting and doubt their life wasted in the past four years of school life.
Something we cannot change, such as the birth, background of family and education; something we just can try to change, such as a job (to be more serious, career), life routine.

- About four years ago, I was facing the same situation that your nephew has now. at that time, I was confused and didn't know what majors and what university I should choose. and the worst thing was that I didnn't have a smartphone to search the information. my family didn't give much suggestions and they respected my choice. most of my family members are accounters,and financiers.so, chronicly, I chose the accounters. and I gave up my interest in language learning, english. now ,since I graduated from my school, I fond I was toally wrong. I shouldn't get involded in this field. there are so many students majoring in accounting, and this major does not require too much your qualification, it needs expriences. the turth is that any one can learn accounting. while the low class of accounting is quite large, but this market is full, enterprises don't need many accounters,one or two is okey. the high class of the field is short,and the exellent accounters are little. so, now while I am working, I have to have test to enhance professional qualifications .now I am preparing the CPA. it is quite tough.few persons can pass it. so, you see, this is the dilemma I am facing.tell your nephew, don't choose accounting, Just choose what he likes and interests in.

- I do understand the situation for the students facing and choosing the major or the college at the moment. I suggest that let them know which fields they don't like most, then we can help them to have the right one.

- It is amazing that even in the present times, people still have no idea as to how to choose a suitable major.
Choosing a major requires professional advice as it involves the students own interests, talent, ability, market needs, future changes and income. The student alone does not have enough experience, information and capability to decide on what to choose. The schools definitely need to assist and guide the students in this important choice. However, some schools feel it is a personal choice of the student, so they would not offer assistance. This is the reason why so many students choose a wrong major. Choosing a major means choosing your future do it with care.
Look around at any university and you will find many students changing their major during the first year. Why should this be allowed to happen. Some students stay on to an unsuitable major and have a few years of dissatisfied studies. There are so many engineers or chemists who took up other unrelated professions like business or sales.
Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on it's ability to climb a tree,
it will live it's whole life believing that is is stupid.
The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.

- Thanks for your sharing and advice. Since mostly we just follow the trend as what people think. So, when there is a hot major, we are easily to follow their instruction. If parents, relatives and friends tell us something nice, we may think it nice too.

Thus we have to cool off mind and make the judge by ourselves. It could be better if there are some nice suggestions which help to give us some tips.

- Schools usually do not pay much attention on students' future. They only focus on the enrollment rates. Though the KPI is somehow important as a measurement for a school's teaching standard, it just can not provide students the right and proper advice. Usually students are blind to pick up a major without thinking it too much. They even do not know what exactly that they are going to do in the future. That is quite terrible.

If there’s no choice, then instead of wasting time complaining and wondering, they still can make full use of the time doing things they enjoy.
Eg, my cousin is a very good example, he didn’t get enough score for doing his prefer course—IT, instead he studies journalism in the Uni. But he spent most of time self-taught IT and English, now he’s working as an IT guy at an American company in Shanghai, he’s very satisfied as he can get 4 weeks’ holiday a year.
Therefore, certificate is not everything, most important thing is you are doing what you really enjoy and it is the main reason for success.
