The dog-eating and the ban

Taiwan animal rights activists are setting a Taiwanese office decision to drop charges against five suspects accused of killing dogs for food. They plan a mass demonstration and tougher laws against animal abuse, saying the current law lacks hard and practical evidences.

Recently, five men were caught killing two dogs by hanging them on a tree and having them grilled. However, prosecutors dropped indictments against the men last week, saying the dog's bodies showed no signs of torture and the men were not caught eating their meat.

Many Taiwanese still believe in dog meat's nutritious value. But the once-common practice has faded in recent years under a ban on killing or torturing animals. Among those who advocate the ban, one of the Taiwan activists said that it is inhumane, and this, in turn, can severely disrupt natural biological functions.

The case is relatively different in other part of the world. In Korea, for instance, it is not only legal but a common practice as well to eat dogs. Dishes made of dogs are enjoying a great popularity, especially in several traditional occasions and in rural areas.

In USA, the majority of American people keep a opposite viewpoint on dog-eating, but there also minority, especially people in places like the small fishing village of Cortez in Manatee County in Florida, residences eat says coyotes, once the quintessential icon of the American Southwest, are increasingly showing up in back yards and snatching up family pets (e.g. cats, puppies and etc.). Actually, they sometimes snatch up puppies just right in front of residents’ eyes.

Likewise, in China mainland, there are some dwellings where people have common custom to eat dogs. Huizhou, city in Guangzhou, is one of the cases. Actually, people there usually gather and eat dogs on the Summer Solstice Day. Before Qing density, local people had the tradition to enjoy one day of on that particular day, gathering with families. Even now, this tradition is used as one of the travel appealing approaches, attracting tourists to undergoing an experience.

From a more humane standpoint, I still suggest the behavior of dog-eating should be banned. Just think the process of cooking dogs, killing, cutting, chopping, stir frying, steaming, just name a few, that can be chilling. Horrible! In extreme cases, it constitutes sheer torture of animals.
