I always believe that if we had met each other earlier, we would have still been friends; if we had met each other later, we would have become lovers. But we met at that time, which led us to such an embarrassment.

January 2nd was my birthday. Getting up late in the morning, I surfed the Internet and checked my e-mail. Opening the latest one, I gasped at it. “Happy birthday to you!” It was him! Tears were rolling down my cheeks and I could not see the words clearly. The air was suddenly frozen. Only my heart was beating quickly. Since the college entrance examination was finished, we haven’t met each other for more than two years…

He was my deskmate. Because we both were not talkative, we hardly spoke to each other. But as deskmates, we developed a kind of tacit understanding. I really enjoyed that kind of feeling. At one time, I even wanted to sit together with him like this forever.

What has made the emotion faint, frail, withered and at last, dead? I have forgotten. Or I would like to say it was something that I wanted to forget; that I once tried my best to forget; that I have never forgotten, but don’t want to mention of.

He accepted a girl’s love and became her boyfriend. I changed from a vivacious and sunny girl into a silent and frosty one. I believed the chemistry between us had faded away, so I just turned away.

On that day, my birthday, facing with the four words, the curse he put on me has been untied. I laughed with tears, loosing all senses. I decided to forgive him.

I don’t know whether it is worthy to exchange one year’s happiness with three years’ sorrow and whether it is worthy to exchange three years’ sorrow with four words. I just loved him during that happy year and missed him during these sad years, never intending to care about whether it is fair or not.
