Shandong official said dialect should be phased out of prime time on TV.

I totally agree with this proposal, as we know, language is the core symbol of the national culture, after 5000 years’ development, Mandarin stands for Chinese civilization and our unification and has been accepted by foreigners; nowadays, Putonghua is the only official language in China, so it’s no doubt that public media should use Mandarin at their programs and push the promotion of Putonghua across the country, it’s their duty; officials are required to use Mandarin in public by our laws, and public medias also should use Putonghua to work based on related regulations, TV programs should not be a exception; using the official language to work in public is an international convention as well, because the same language can strengthen the sense of cultural identity and belongings in a country, if every region mainly tend to uses own dialect in most of situations, it’s a big problems of management for a country;

According to the suggestion of the official, he only advise to ban the dialect in the prime time on TV, I think it’s not enough, we should prohibit the hosts of public media to use dialect on TV or radio, that’s the requirements of our related regulation; pushing the promotion of Putonghua doesn’t mean to kill the dialect, in fact, there is no any conflict between Mandarin and regional languages, in my mind, I only spoke local language before I went to college many years ago even though the language which I watched TV programs and listened to radio was Mandarin, I never thought it’s a problem to my dialect, till now TV programs in my hometown are still broadcasted in Mandarin, but that doesn’t affect on our daily life, local residents speak in dialect as before, there is no any difference and any inconvenience;

Of course, while we advocate speaking Putonghua, we also should take some measures to protect and promote our various colorful local languages, for example, we can make some TV show programs or situation comedies in dialect. In recent years, more and more local TVs plan to begin to broadcast programs in dialect, it’s not good news for our country, it’s beyond doubt that businessmen want to earn more money, but they shouldn’t take such steps to absorb the interests of local residents, it can deepen the sectionalism and superiority complex.

Briefly, we should let all the TV stations to obey the related laws, and everybody has the duty to promote Mandarin in public, so it’s time for our governments to phase the dialect programs out of the prime time on TV;

Your commentary is persuasive. I'm apt to Shandong dialect be phased out.

I don't think it's viable to prohibit of dialect using in public media completely right away.

In the first place, it’s too hasty to realize. Furthermore, language as one of typical cultures of a region/nationality, neither individuals nor organizations can deprive of native’s rights if they protest prohibition. At last, as a local media, mostly serves for the locals. It’ll lost its existent meaning in the case of unpleasant programs as a result of distasteful vocal host.

What we need are standard language, richness of Chinese culture as well as citizen’s freedom and rights.
