The problem facing our school

Hot 3500 views. 2013-7-4 00:10 | afternoon, concerned, teachers, problem, towards

This afternoon we were summoned to have a meeting towards the close of this semester. Our headmaster showed his disappointment at the performance of the students of Grade Six in their graduation exams today. He urged all teachers concerned to reflect on their work thoroughly. He called on us to try our best to obtain ideal academic achievement. Otherwise all of us would be humiliated for the extensive failure of our teaching. In the meantime he mentioned and criticized the long existing abuse to cover up the problems by making up grades. He said we must do away with the evil practice if we long for improvement in work sincerely.

i think most of the pressure will be transferred to the students. children will do more and more homework. and  they will face many interest classes that they do not like at all. nowadays the children's childhood is not happy as 70 80. they have no time to enjoy the beautiful starry sky. they have no free to running on the country road. most of their time, they study, play, live under their parents' and their teachers' eyes.

Admittedly, there could be some deficiencies somewhere in the school either with the teaching methods, facilities or the quality of the students. Using grades as a medium for evaluating students is undesirable and it only results in producing computer function like students without much real intelligence or creativity. That also gives excessive pressure to students just for the sake of better grades. The public examinations system is actually a competition or match for schools.

In Hong Kong, we used to have Band 1, Band 2, Band 3 and Band 4 schools and the banding is a result of their examination results in public examinations. Band 1 the best and Band 4 the worst.

Eventually the Education Authority eliminated the banding system and forcibly bused students of different banding with satisfactory results. The authorities also adopted modern new teaching methods and a new examination system. Grades are no more important but the students genuine learning abilities counts.

What we want are intelligent, creative, smart, knowledgeable and progressive students. Having students who are only studious is undesirable as they cannot meet the demands of our modern economy and society.

Duck feeding methods or lecture style teaching methods are gradually being replaced in most of the progressive countries worldwide.

There is a lot things to be changed. Once my foreign friend said, some chinese teachers don't know how to teach, the teacher talked so much during class. In fact, the student should be the center in a class instead of teacher. More free thoughts and ideas should be given and shared by the students, that makes them think better and learn better......
