Fascination of Chinese brush writing

Hot 2577 views. 2013-7-16 23:23

Nowadays most of the institutions of higher learning print their admission notices with the aid of computers to which we have been quite used. However, Shaanxi Normal University returns to tradition with its admission notices neatly written by its old professors with brushes. These  thick-inked and ingenious admission notices have become one of the hot topics on the net recently.

It is most appropriate for a university to use traditional Chinese brush calligraphy to write out admission notices. In the ancient times a candidate could manifest his literary talent and calligraphy in the Imperial Examination, for it gave a fine first impression to the examiners.

Chinese calligraphy occupies a distinguished position in the field of traditional art. It is not only a means of communication, but also a means of expressing a person's inner world in an aesthetic sense.

Today's young generation does not have that skill. To practise calligraphy requires the basic tools of 'four treasures of study' (writing brush, ink stick, paper, and ink slab) as well as much concentration on guiding the soft writing brush charged with fluid ink, and writing on the paper where the ink will diffuse quickly. Once the brush movement hesitates, a black mark is created, so speed, strength and agility is the essence of fine artwork. When writing, many calligraphers will forget all worries and even themselves, combining all thoughts in the beauty of their art.

Occasionally, I can still see some elderly gentlemen display their traditional calligraphy. The way they pull up their sleeves, take a firm posture and start writing in a firm and confident manner is indeed impressive. The most recent occasion I saw that was during the spring festival when they wrote out those red well wishing banners as blessing gifts to members of the public. We need to train more young people to learn this art and skill before it fades away.
