Self-sufficiency

Hot 3583 views. 2013-7-31 09:35 | collective, childhood, clothing, shelter, sister

In my childhood, our family was almost self-sufficient in food, clothing and shelter of these basic necessities of life. At that time, agricultural co-operatives were well under way across the countryside. Every day father, mother, elder sister and brother would go to work on the collective farm with other laborers to earn their workpoints and share of grain in the harvest seasons. When the grain distributed to us was less than we needed, we had to buy some from the market to fill the gap. Because my native land could grow cotton efficiently, mother would spin and weave it into cloth for making clothes and quilts for our family. Even now some of her products are among our possessions. We consumed salt produced by our own for our land was rich in saline-alkali soil. We made earthen bricks forming most of the walls of our house only with its surface laid with burnt bricks. From the descriptions above, you could conclude our land was barren. But it is the life there that laid a solid foundation in my mind to cope with the difficulties later and in the future with ease.

You are fortunate to be so self sufficient in those turbulent times. Millions of people died of hunger during those days. Actually, with a reasonably sized fertile farmland, a family can live quite well.

Most people don't know why the USA is rich. Actually, it is quite simple. Everything starts from the ground. You just throw seeds onto that fertile field and food grows there. Grains, fruits or staples thrive. Once a country has enough to eat, most problems are automatically solved and they can go on to develop consumer products like cars, appliances, technology etc. Other countries unfortunately don't have this advantage.

Even though life is hard at that time, it leaves you something to cherish, such as the stuffs made by your mother.

Yes, you are right. A person cannot become wealthy through farming in China. I am talking about USA farmland and USA farmers who are rich.

In China, some farmers can generate money to support their children, but of course, that is small money. People still need a regular job to live decent life.
