At 11:03 am on October 31, an earthquake measuring 5.5
on the Richter scale occurred at Qianguoxian county to the west of our county. I
felt the tremor at the moment at our office with some of my colleagues. We were
sitting at our desks by the same wall. At first we didn't think it an
earthquake but mistook it for someone bumping something against our desks by
accident or some heavy truck passing by causing the vibration. It was said this
started a panic among the faculty and the student body of the Central School of
our town, who rushed out of the five-storey tall building immediately. I was calm and
didn't flee for our office building is a solid bungalow.
