A heavy snowfall

Hot 2536 views. 2013-11-19 00:13 | telephone, cleaners, morning, through, yellow

At dawn this morning I was wakened by the ringing bell of our telephone. At the other end of the phone was our headmaster who told me we were off duty today due to the snowstorm. I went to mother's through the main street to avoid cold wind and deep snow on the west route exposed to the fields. I found a forklift truck was used to clear the snow on the road. A group of old cleaners in yellow were standing by,each with a spade in his or her hand. The fallen snow in our yard was so deep that we could only open a path on the pavement with difficulty. Outside, flanking the gate there was no more room for dumping any snow. I decided to move the snow to the backyard. Now the man living opposite can hardly park his car in front of our shed any more for a ridge of snow has taken up the position.

Sounds like the weather in Europe. I wonder how are the relationships between neighbors in your place. Are they warm, friendly, caring or cold, snobbish, status conscious, unfriendly, self-protective, isolated like the ones we have in our city? Here, quite often we don't even know the surnames of our neighbors. When we open our doors, they close theirs and vice versa. People were much more neighborly and friendly before.

I live at a little town surrounded by villages. We have moved house for three times since we settled here over three decades ago. At our first dwelling our next-door neighbor on the east often made deliberate provocation against us. When our present bungalow was built in 1997 with those of my colleagues in a row, our immediate neighbors were either aggressive or quarrelsome until they moved out. But a new vicious neighbor moved in the house opposite ours soon after. He borrowed more than ¥2,000 secretly from wife when she was alive. He has failed to pay it off up to now. These are all the bad ones of my neighbors. As for others, some were friendly and helpful, and some only so-so. Now I have little contact with my new neighbors sharing the same stairway in the apartment building except greeting a few when coming across on the way.

Basically, it is the same in both yours and my place.
I wonder why people have to be so cold and uncaring or even unpleasant.
A close neighbor can be more helpful than a far away relative. Hope people would realize the benefits of kindness and mutual help. Tks.
