Hot 2456 views. 2013-12-22 22:25 | calendar, festival, Chinese, between, solar

Winter Solstice arrives today, which is the 22nd solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar. It is also a traditional Chinese festival, commonly known as Midwinter, the Longest Night. Ancient Chinese had determined the date of the Winter Solstice with the sundial over 2,500 years ago in the Spring and Autumn Period. It comes annually between December 21 and December 23 in Northern Hemisphere according to Gregorian calendar. Today has the shortest daytime and the longest nighttime in the whole year. This holiday is observed across most areas of China, during which northerners usually eat dumplings and southerners have sweet dumplings and pumpkins. Let's eat dumplings together on the arrival of Midwinter, as the saying goes.

It is quite surprising that in my city, the Winter Solstice festival is actively observed. Even the younger generation earnestly try join parents for a large sumptuous family dinner. Most people say the Tung festival is bigger than the Spring festival to demonstrate it's importance.

The Tung festival is originally a festival observed by the rural agricultural communities to mark the end of the farming season.
